Hiya Steve! There is no point convincing those who are accustomed to doing things their way for a long while, irrespective of medical innovations. There are millions of folks who still swim, wash and directly drink from the Ganges, Nile and Amazon rivers, among other bodies of water. Others, have never heard of acid rain. I am just amazed at the lack of healthy living in so many folks.

I don't think anyone here suggested that we whose bodies are unused to defending against the pathogens of the Ganges or Amazon drink of those waters without boiling.

This was a discussion about using rain water, which may be a lot cleaner some places than others.

I think we're in danger of drifting into political waters here.

Mauritz, as a Board Certified Pharmacist, perhaps you could educate the many folks who drink catchment rainwater of the medical innovations that contravene their practice of "doing things their way for a long while"?

Does not the fact of multitudes successfully practicing such activities seem to indicate that it is indeed a healthy way of life? (This does not refer to river water... just rainwater collected in rural Australia and other similar venues). As I mentioned before, I am unaware of any epidemiological data that suggest the contrary. Again, perhaps you could point us toward a citation supporting your statement.

And for Steve, I believe that most of the discussion here was directed at macro, not micro biota. Not even us yotties think we can see bacteria.

Oh BTW, the OP mentioned something about "biological transmutation of elements" or something like that. That will be of extreme interest to all alchemists, who have been stuffing about for centuries with wet chemistry techniques to do that. But I digress...

Lots of people sucessfully engage in the practice of smoking cigarettes too. For decades, even. Doesn't make it a healthy way of life.

It is just lame. A person needs to throw out the title in here. I was a licensed Pharmacist a long long time a go. I went back to school because I prefer to be call Doctor.

I don't mind to drink rain water either. I don't need bottle water to survive. I use common sense to survive.

But fstbttms, there is a GREAT deal of epidemiological evidence that cigarette smoking is NOT healthy. My point is that such evidence is lacking in the rainwater discussion.

We often see Dr. xxx is a board certified oncologist or cardiologist.

When I was stationed in Hawaii, we did a survival course before they would consider sending you to Ranger school. We were issued iodine tablets for the times we couldn't find "steady moving" water. Never for a moment even considered getting sick from drinking water from a stream, waterfall or rain catch rig. I grew up drinking water from what is now considered hazardous. Never had an issue, that is until we did some training with the Aussies in Darwin. Drank from the same source dozens of other troops drank from and I was the only one that got ill. It wasn't bad and passed pretty quickly, but the lesson learned is that water anywhere can affect each of us differently. When in doubt, boil it out!!

I grew up drinking water from streams in the Sierra Nevada, North Georgia, the Appalachians, Minnesota lakes, etc. Never sick. But now Giardia lamblia is widespread, and it's worse than a couple of days of the runs. Once it's in a stream it doesn't go away. Spread by fecal matter from infected animals.

No basements here in South Texas, and out here in the boonies, not much air pollution (compared to most of the US, not Bermuda). My former homes in the Rio Grande Valley had oyster shell/lime roofing until I replaced with standard shingles. That shell was good hurricane-proof stuff (well...), until a damned tree trimmer dropped a huge bo tree limb through it .

As far as rainwater, I catch a little to drink sometimes, good stuff; but most of our water comes from an aquifer deep underground, filtered through thousands of feet of limestone, clean and pure (so far). In the Valley that stuff drawn from the Rio Grande was pretty bad tasting, full of sediment and crud (and probably pathogens), bleccch...

Well now we have people emptying there Un composted nature's/air heads in the woods we should be boiling the once pristine water flowing from the hills down to the Anchorage.
