Re: Do you use a cheap camp stove to cook on? What kind of fuel does it use?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one of these Coleman dual-fuel stoves tomorrow. I found a new one on Craigslist for only $40. It burns Coleman white gas or regular ol unleaded gas. I can use it outside when I want to and I know from personal experience that Coleman stoves last forever. Plus the thing is super efficient as one tank (2.5 pints) should last at least a month which means a gallon of Coleman white gas should last 3.5 months. Cheap!

Yes.
Propane in a one-pound bottle. Lasts about a week of breakfasts. All leaks are either blown away or go out the scuppers. But we are careful to have no leaks. It's not a very cheap stove!
No, we cook on a non-skid plank in the cockpit.

Re: Do you use a cheap camp stove to cook on? What kind of fuel does it use?

I have a Coleman double burner camp stove than runs on the one pound bottles that we frequently use to cook on. For short trips, it's a lot less trouble than using the LPG stove in the boat.

Re: Do you use a cheap camp stove to cook on? What kind of fuel does it use?

If you opt for a liquid fuel Coleman stove, you can buy an adaptor that screws onto a long thin 1 pound propane bottle, that fits in the stove the same as the fuel tank with the long generator rod.

That allows you to use either tank, with propane or coleman fuel.

If you use gasoline, be very careful of fumes. High test gasoline contains some very nasty chemicals that make very bad fumes. Gasoline does not last as long as coleman fuel, and neither does the stove's generator if you use gasoline.

I use a two burner non pressure alcohol shotv. But just recently bought a Nuwave induction cook top. No heat in cabin like the alcohol burning. Love it.

I had a freaky experience many years ago where my alcohol stove started on fire and I could hardly see the flame so that is why I ruled out an alcohol stove.

Anyone used a Jetboil? Home Page | Jetboil

No affiliation.

Would you really have to use this in the cockpit only? Surely boiling a cup of water in less than a minute once or twice a day down in the cabin with one of these Jetboils or similar product is not going to create any hazards?

Edit: I just read one of the manuals. Says you shouldn't use this in an enclosed space as it produces carbon monoxide.

We have three cooking sources. All cheap:

1 - A thirty dollar two hob gas burner, which connects to our propane gas cylinder.
2 - A rail mounted BBQ which connects to small EPI gas bottles.
3 - My back pack burner, which also connects to EPI gas bottles, but has a different thread from the BBQ. Go figger.

Wasn't there a recent thread posted about a boat blowing up and the owner getting seriously burned as a result of someone using a camp stove in his catamaran? I believe it was posted about two weeks ago on this forum.

As another posted, CO is slightly less dense than air. But it is close enough that it diffuses throughout the room.

From:
Should the placement of carbon monoxide (CO) det... [J Emerg Med. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI

RESULTS:
Contrary to a significant amount of public opinion, CO did not layer on the floor, float at the middle of the chamber, or rise to the top. In each case, the levels of CO equalized throughout the test chamber.

I haven't mounted it as of yet, but I have one of those gimballed Forespar single burners that runs off a little butane bottle below. That's the ticket for on-watch coffee or a little tin of soup.

Perfect for the pilothouse, but as per usual, open a hatch.

Re: Do you use a cheap camp stove to cook on? What kind of fuel does it use?

There was a warning that went out regarding the canister fueled back-packing stoves some time back. It seems that a lot of people were putting wind screens around the bottle and burner. This would trap heat and the top of the bottle would get hot in a hurry. The increase in pressure created a possible bursting danger. It is unclear if one actually ever actually popped, but it was enough that the canister manufacturers added warnings to their offerings.

I have never seen it as an issue and I use a wind screen. I always monitor my stove when cooking and if I feel the canister getting warm, opening the screen a little alleviates it quickly. A little common sense and the stoves can be used safely in or out. No unventilated spaces. Pay attention to the canister's temperature. Watch for leaks.
