Isn't canning in jars using Mason Jars and mostly done at home?

Oh, you've pointed out a strange usage that I'm familiar with, but I was never struck with how odd it is until your response.

When we buy foods from the shelves in grocery stores, those in metal containers are called cans and those in glass containers are known as jars.

Ironically, the verb "canning" is the homespun activity of sterilizing foods and storing them in glass jars.

Thanks for the insight. I never noticed how weird this was!

Ok...Youre thinking of Canning (the verb)...thats where you preserve food in sterilized glass mason jars for use over the winter.... Grandma used to do that back on the farm every autumn...

Canned foods (the noun) in American english is usually meant to be store bought foods that are sealed in a metal can...or a mylar bag or even a glass jar for that matter.

Also don't underestimate the difficulty of getting the labels back on the right side up. Except when you have a catamaran, in which case you may be better of with the labels upside down

I would suggest you not worry about BPA, and instead ensure your safety precautions are up to standard to protect against common dihydrogen monoxide. Can be much more dangerous than BPA

Upside or downside isn't too much of a problem. Last time I got them all inside out!!

Read up on the history of food preservation. "Canning" was the process used to preserve food. Glass jars were used initially (and still for non-industrial scale). Metal cans were invented because the glass ones broke too easily in the soldier's backpacks...

This food preservation technique was called "conserves", not "canning" as it was a French invention for Napoleon's army. After mr. Weck started manufacturing the glass jars designed for doing this at home, many called it "Wecken" because the name "Weck" is on those jars (still made).

The English came up with the word "can" as slang for "canister", which explains a lot for the English speaking among us. You can have a glass canister as well as a metal one, but most don't realize the word "can" is slang for canister
