Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

It would be great for a home. I felt I needed it as much drinking the water in Los Angeles than Mexico. They add so much chlorine & fluorine. That's not counting the stuff companies dump that we don't know about!!

Exactly. I've seen what water does to the bottoms of boats, therefore I drink Scotch.

I follow a similar plan-
J&B with tank water and tank water ice;-)

If you're cruising in the Bahamas is it necessary to add purification tabs to the tanks if you are going to use it for drinking water?

Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

I have two 35 gallon polyethylene water tanks. I fill them strictly with municipal water from the dock or a hose bib, through a household water filter, adding one tablespoon of bleach to each tank. I drink it and my water has always been clear and fresh.

For some reason, it seems that many marinas supply well water to their docks, from wells on their premises. There are always people drinking that. If it's clean and I trust it I'll wash my dishes in it, but that's it. I would never drink or cook with such well water. Where there's a well, there's a septic system nearby.

Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

I just started to because I was sick of lugging plastic bottles around. I'm pretty paranoid too. I did a similar version of the chlorine flush recommended above. I put about a fourth a cup per gallon of water and let it sit and pumped it through the hoses and let that sit for eight hours. I opened the two plastic 30 gallon tanks and wiped the algae or whatever it was that was sitting along the bottom line. Then I flushed everything with tankfuls of fresh water and now I drink it.

Oh, and I did add some of water tank taste better additive. I think that worked too.

Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

Filter on the hose to refill, chlorine once in a while, inspect and clean sometimes and filter with activated charcoal just in case before drinking it.

I drunk Brazilian tap water most of my life and never had problems, so I may not be a good example, but in general I would say it is safe.

My water tanks are glassed though. Is it better or worst than SS?

Best

Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

I do not.... I use bottled or filtered water I bring. I have an inline filter I use for water for boiling pasta... but every other use for water / eating / drinking is NOT from the tanks.

Just look at it this way, forget the Clorox. A little algae serves as the RDA of fruits and veggies.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Most available water in the Bahamas is from RO systems or rain water catchments. I typically put a few drops of clorox in a 5 gallon jerry jug.
I've been drinking my tank water for decades and I ain't dead yet lol.

Some say the world will end in fire,
some say in ice.
I think it's going to implode from the weight of discarded plastic containers.
Visit the windward shores of some of the Bahamian out islands and see what you think.

Given this challenge, I think there is no other explanation possible other than the world will implode from the weight of left foot shoes.

Apparently, our parallel universe will simultaneously implode from the weight of right foot shoes.

Re: Do You Drink Tank Water !?

+1 on pool test strips. About $7 for 50 strips from Amazon.

I use these to make sure I have a low level of chlorine between 0.5ppm and 1.0ppm in the tank - I add an 1/8 of a teaspoon of pool chlorinating granules per 100 gallons as necessary to maintain this level.

I can't taste or smell this level.

Any water coming onto the boat goes through a standard 10" filter. A drinking water spigot runs the water through a final filter.

Inexpensive. Better tasting than bottled water. Very easy to manage.
