Fairly well known that beef tastes different if the animal release adrenalin before it dies, hence the unique design of "good" slaughter houses. Likewise lobster tastes better if they have a little vodka in their final bath.

Does the means and method used to,dispatch the fish really make a difference?

I'm a sucker for a good story well told. My first thought reading the OP was WTF? Then, someone suggested calming the fish before beating it senseless. I usually offer white wine and some cheese before getting down to business.

However, leave it to Prof Daddle to see thru the BS:

Whip a 12 penny nail (biggest) you can find to a 3 ft broom handle. bend in 90 degree angle then sharpen.
Pop em midway tween eyes. worked fishboats awhile idea is get 'em on ice as fast as possible and keep up with line as it comes in no matter what!

For smaller fish a mix of ice and seawater is best. unhook right in slush and toss back in after gutting to wash.

With the death of acid rock, I learned to like Heavy Metal.....

I have dispatched them with a club, or immediate gutting to avoid spoiling the meat. But as a "foodie" if there was a scientific reason for wasting alcohol on a fish, I'd start buying cheap stuff.

Good Lord, Some of you guys are a real ball!! Heck I carry a good amount of Good Rum aboard, just for medical reasons of course! Im sure not gonna waste any on a fish !! If ya use heavy gear to catch em ya just need to cut the tail and let em drag and then bring em aboard all bled out !! Easy -Pesey And it makes em taste better when they are bled before cleanin them, Just my 2 cents

I don't like the thought of making any creature suffer more than absolutely necessary. The concept of wounding them and dragging them behind the boat seems evil to me .... and Zeehag - at first I thought you were joking but I am starting to think you are serious about cleaning fish when they are still alive .... that is disgusting.
