"Worth it" comes very close, but I'd describe it in an even more nuanced way: the outcome of a time-value analysis where we weigh time available to do more enjoyable stuff against the cost of alternative approaches to less enjoyable stuff. Cost writ large. Eventually influenced by the size and shape of my wallet, at the time. Even slightly influenced by actuarial analysis (including predictions), and so forth.

Certainly not a one-size-fits-all analysis.

We have a dishwasher at home and seldom use it. With just two people, it doesn't make sense to run a dishwasher.

I couldn't fit one on my boat anyway so it's a non issue. I think my human dishwasher could be trained to use less water than what she uses but I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle.

Well, understand we don't actually have a dishwasher on board now -- other than me, of course -- so some of my discussion was philosophical...

But sure, if we ever install one, come ahead on over!

Bring beverages, too... so we'll have something useful to do while the machine does its thing.

Most cruisers use very few dishes. For the two of us, it would take a few days to fill a dishwasher & we don't carry that much table-ware. With a foot pump for salt & another for fresh, you can be pretty stingy. Our boat is 58 feet and I have no idea where I would put one.

The thought of bringing seawater to the galley sink is interesting but where I usually cruise, I'm not sure I would be comfortable with that. Wiping the dishes first with a paper towel would probably save water.

A seawater prerinse makes more sense besidess where would you put all the extra paper towels and the resultant rubbish on a long cruise

I don't see the arguments again dishwashers, its a modern convenience , if you can power it and have water for it , I see no issue.

you might as well argue against any labour saving technology on a boat.

Particually when the OP in opening the thread specifically suggested she did not want any debate on the merits of diswashers.

But then again the usual crowd pops up denouncing the dishwasher.

As one of the "usual crowd" I'll just say I don't give a damn if the OP (or you) wants to use a dishwasher. What I do give a damn about is when people make ridiculous statements like "Dishwashers use less water than hand-washing. This cannot be debated," and then go on to use it to justify their supposed need.

If you hate washing dishes so much that you are willing to go to pretty extreme lengths in cost and resources to avoid it, then fine. But be honest enough to say so.

OP back to check if anything useful came up. Go right ahead and wash your dishes with ouzo and urine, for all I care. I personally like my dishes to be relatively sterile before I put food on them. Call me strange, but I choose to live in the twenty first century. Cruising doesn't mean deprivation, in my book.

The OP wants serious answers. Here is mine.

I see it as a matter of priorities, and those differ with every person and their resources.

If I had a big cat or big mono with the space and shore power, I would prefer to have a clothes washing machine onboard rather than a dish washing machine.

Reason?

I think it is more of a hassle to wash clothing.

And, I can get anyone on the boat to wash some dishes, whereas there might be objections to washing a crew load of dirty stinking clothes whether by hand or schlepping it to some shore self serve laundry.

I'm with you there, but why not have both? We're only a crew of two and by the time we had a load of clothes, we'd have a load of dishes, too. Just start the genny, charge the batts, and get the washing done every so often.
