Re: Costco Canned Chicken . . . a Contender

Tesco Beef Curry, Tesco Chicken & Veg Casserole, Tesco Beef & Ale Stew, Tesco Chicken Curry -- yum! And dozens of other things as well. And all for between 0.99 and 1.28 per 400g can (or tin, as they say over here). And Tesco delivers right to the boat!!!

We also have a large separate freezer, and I won't even start in with what you can buy frozen.

So feeding the crew nowadays is really not much of a problem. Laying in a month of provisions is just not a big deal. I love to cook, but I now do it only when I feel like it.

Costco are in the UK, but not in Southampton. Pity -- I like to provision at Costco. I am a Costco member and provisioned with great pleasure at Costco when I was cruising the Sea of Cortez.

But on the other hand, when you have Tesco, which even delivers (!), you don't really miss Costco all that much. Tesco is extremely cheap and extremely good, and unlike Costco, they have everything, and not only in bulk quantities.

Grocery retailers in the U.K. like Sainsbury and Tesco are more efficient than what we have in the U.S., in my experience. When you consider the prices include 20% VAT, it is hard to understand how they can be so cheap. So Costco makes somewhat less sense here as an alternative to normal supermarkets. I also have a UK CostCo membership and I've let it lapse. Although CostCo is only 5 miles from my house, Tescos is less than 2 and I have to drive past it and Asda (=Walmart UK) to get to CostCo and Tesco's prices are unbeatable.

The tinned vegetables are amazingly good value too - beans, tomatoes, kidney beans, peas, various fruits, etc all for around 50p (30 cents) per tin. When I buy the boat maybe I should name it "S/V Tesco Afloat" because I know what is going to be in the food storage....

Minty, I used to love Tesco's when I lived there. It is cheap, but not that cheap . 50 pence are 80 cents. You took teh values the wrong way round. 1 pound is $1.60 .

And Costco Chicken in a can is great . Does not have that funky smell of other canned chicken either. Used it a lot for salads and tacos.

Re: Costco Canned Chicken . . . a Contender

You guys down in the US have it nice. I've never ever seen the canned beef in any Costco up here in Canada, and I've been in about a dozen of them all over the place.

The canned chicken is very good. No doubt about it, I've made chicken salad with it and broken it up in rice with peppers and peas. Good stuff.

Much improved over the whole canned chicken I bought a few years ago. Opened that can up, and the bird was cylindrical in shape, every bone in it splintered. Totally inedible, as they had put the bird in the can with a 5 ton hydraulic press. At least it sure looked that way.

I wondered when someone would mention Fray Bentos, a legend amongst UK yachties for the past 4 decades. Inerestingly Morrisons one of the smaller UK supermarkets do their own range too, but they are a little too cheap for me.

Premier Foods - Fray Bentos

So I brought a couple home. Viv turned her nose up at them, so they were stuffed in a cupboard. Andrew our 17 year old who is constantly hungry but like all teenagers basically lazy decided to have one for lunch. Of course he didn't read the instructions on the tin, instead dumped it into a bowl and stuffed it into the microwave. At which point I entered the kitchen. Whilst hot the puff pastry was still uncooked Still he learnt a valuable lesson in life.

Re: Costco Canned Chicken . . . a Contender

I always keep a stash of canned goods onboard as it gives us more flexibility, whether we stay at a spot longer than planned, go out for unplanned dinners, find that provisions are not readily available, or just don't feel like cooking.

The secret is to find what tastes good and what doesn't. We always have lots of canned chicken and tuna. I have a fabulous curried chicken salad recipe that we like even if other "non-canned" choices are available. The biggest disappointment is canned veggies. We find corn and green beans are OK but haven't found others we like.

Of course, we use fresh as much as possible not just because of the taste but also quality and nutrition. Read Michael Pollan's (author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma") book "In Defense Of Food" a few years back and found it life changing.

Happy to share! It comes from "The Curry Book" by Nancie McDermott. A great book! I cook several times a week from it.

Salad:
2.5 cups cooked chicken
0.5 cup dry-roasted salted cashews
0.25 cup dried cranberries (you can also use raisins but I like the cranberries better)
2 green onions (or whatever kind of onion you have around)

Dressing:
0.5 cup mayo
2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons mango chutney
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons curry powder
0.25 teapsoon ground pepper

Combine the dressing with the salad and enjoy!
