Cost of Living Indicator for Cruisers

To get a handle on what it actually costs in US dollars to live anywhere in the world, let cruisers worldwide contribute in the following way if they wish...

Where are you at present?

What is the sum total to purchase the following goods:-
1) 4 litres of diesel.
2) 4 litres petrol.
3) 4 litres milk.
4) A loaf of bread around 700 grams.
5) A kilo of minced beef.
6) A kilo of potatoes.
7) A dozen eggs.

So here in Gladstone Australia, which is adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef, it would cost us $32:38 to purchase those items.

A basic indicator but i think might give an idea for us all.

G'day, mate. Good idea. Just bought everything on the list as we did a shop up earlier in the week. $28.30 USD was our total. Some things were on special.

You didn't include a couple other key items. Bottle of clean skin sauvignon blanc wine = $5.30 and a case (24) of 5% alcohol beer = $25.50. Boneless, skinless chicken breast on special = $4.80 a pound if any one cares. All prices include all taxes.

We have been going back and forth between the states and NZ now for 13 years and overall manage to keep our monthly spend about the same between the two countries. Some things are definitely more expensive in N.Z. like the beer, protien, and insurance, but fuel is definitely cheaper in the U.S.

New Zealand does not subsidize our agriculture producers no where near the extent they do in the U.S. and Europe.

For those of us who do not commonly use metrics I have added some conversions

2) 4 litres petrol.
3) 4 litres milk.
4) A loaf of bread around 700 grams.
5) A kilo of minced beef. 1 kilo = 2.2 lbs
6) A kilo of potatoes.
7) A dozen eggs. A dozen metric eggs = 12 US eggs

So here in Gladstone Australia, which is adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef, it would cost us $32:38 to purchase those items.

I like the idea. In California the breakdown is as follows:
1) US gallon of diesel $3.99
2) US gallon of gas $3.45
3) US gallon of milk $4.00
4) Loaf of Bread $4.59 (Fancy whole wheat Bread) can be much cheaper
5) Mince (Hamburger) $8.78
6) Potatoes (kilo) $2.20
7) Eggs $2.79

Total of $29.80. Lots of food was on sale for holidays

You know that probably in first (and even in second) world countries these costs will probably come out to be almost the same because they are commodities. The big differences are going to be found in built in taxes (escpecially for fuel)

It's like using the Big Mac index for comparing various countries currenies. because a Big Mac is a very standardized item, comparing the price in different countries gives a pretty good currenty exchange rate.

If we can get lots from say Virgin Islands, Pacific, Med etc etc it stops a lot of debate and tells us so much because usually the Restaurant Cafe prices follow suit.

Minced meat. Used to make spagetti bolonaise, meat patties, in tacos and many other uses. Is pretty much a stable for families and a cheaper cut.

Can also get minced pork, lamb etc.

Exactly, "The Cruisers Forum Cost Index" no point in complicating it i think, just essentials x one currency.

In Northern Cyprus, total for everything would be approximately 62 Turkish Lira depending on where and when purchased....which would be $34.10 USD.
