I have to admit, that when cruising, I use nothing but instant. But, I try and make up for it by always buying the really uppity, and fancy, instant coffee.

Had a new coffee making experience on a kayaking trip recently...a sock-like filter on a wire frame. Awkward and messy, but super lightweigth and compact. Making coffee was a two person job. Sure beat the hell outta no coffe though!

Interesting, but wont be buying one for the boat.

Bodum French press and a stainless steel percalator. I think I prefer the percalatorbut the French Press is faster because you can use the kettle.

I've used the jug with a simple paper filter holder underway. Works well until suddenly it doesn't. !!!

Now I generally use a cafetiere ( French press for the colonials ) , ( which actually was invented by an Italian ) I had a great plastic one for many years that I bought in France and couldn't subsequently find again

I view instant as the spawn of the devil.

At home I occasionally like an European style espresso and I use a netpresso machine , but mostly also a cafetiere.

If you like the press style coffee maker then SS is the only way to go. Even though the glass ones are much cheaper sooner or later they break.

The Aeropress is fantastic, true convert !! Use to fuss over French press but the clean up was always pita. As seaworthy lass mentions water temp is the key (190f for me) and I find the Inverted method works well and keeps all the water and grounds together during brew period. As a bonus I recently picked up this portable grinder and it stores inside the Aeropress plunger recess just perfect

A lot of folks mention french press clean up being a PITA, but I dont get it. We use SS presses ashore and afloat and clean up is quite easy. On the boat I just step to the stern, dunk the whole thing in the sea and then dump the grounds overboard. Spritz with fresh water and Im done. Where is the PITA part?

Maybe they don't have a rear platform? The Aeropress cleanup looks like a cinch, as you just punch out the grinds.

Ikea sells a great double walled french press SS coffee pot for a reasonable price. We use that and also a percolator which we keep on board, also SS. Depends if we are on the move and want that pot of coffee to go or if we are sitting at anchor and just want to use percolator on propane stove top. No gen set just our trusty Honda 2000 which we use for other purposes.
That way we have a back up just in case and two ways to handle the decaf/full leaded preferences if we have friends aboard.

Here's another vote for the aeropress. We have tried many types, since my DH is big into coffee. We now own 2 aeropress, so you can set up both cups at the same time while the water is heating.

Like it strong? I usually will add just a tad bit more coffee and then add slightly more water and control when and how fast I press the plunger down. Smooth non-bitter coffee every time!

Several people have mentioned the ease of cleaning and removing the grounds. They are also very compact and stow well on a boat.

My favorite coffee mug is the Oxo Travel Mug, which has a easy push button for closing.

For me, space is a premium concern so I've been using a drip system from REI:

It is a silicone cone that collapses into a flat disk ~15mm thick.

Just made my first cup of coffee with my Aeropress that arrived yesterday, using the inverted method. Wow, what a difference - far better than my cafetiere and drip cone. Not sure if the Aeropress beats the Bialetti in taste or not. It does in volume though so the Aeropress is my new preferred method of brewing, along with the Hario hand grinder.
