Coffee maker...

A single cup electric drip coffee maker with a permanent filter. My wife doesn't drink coffee, only me.

It's stainless steel and came with it's own stainless steel insulated cup with "sippy" lid.

i measured the electrical consumption of many electric coffee makers and rejected those due to sucking batteries dry when anchored and moored...
i dislike french press coffee, as many leave too many crunchies in the stuff sposedly drinkable--isnt drinkable if there is something in it to choke me. rodl.
cone drip. cleans easily and no crunchy stuff in my cup.
for crunchy bitter coffee i can overspend at starbucks......

Depending on whether I'm moving or not I either use use a turkish pot or french press. If press I then put the remaining coffee in a 1L ss thermos from Starbucks. Just need to make sure it is made in Japan and not some cheap immitation as the real Japanese ones hold heat when full for at least 24hrs. Also they have comfortable handle, easy to pour spout, right size cup, etc. Great on long watches too. I just recently purchased add'l 1.5L ss thermos by Zojirushi(?) (which I believe brands some of their stuff to Starbucks) as 1L proved a bit small for crews of more than 3. Now I can use both for tea and coffee separately.

The only other ss thermos brand that comes close to Zojirushi (or may even be better) as far as keeping things hot for a long time is Germany's Senator. But don't think it's sold here in US. If you come across one at a yard sale I highly recommend it.

Ahhh, coffee on a boat. Based on my experience, the ideal coffee maker...

- Makes coffee fast, and in usable quantity
- Does not require consumables, like disposable filters
- Uses minimal energy, preferably no electricity
- Is easy and safe to use on a passage
- Is easy to clean
- Keeps coffee warm without transfer to another vessel, like a thermos
- Is durable/unbreakable

For me the SS french press does it the best. Unlike a melitta, it does not require filters, does not require you to wait...and wait and wait while the last pour into the cone makes it's way through, and is safe to use on a passage. Pouring boiling water into a melitta cone on top of a thermos in the sink while the boat is rolling has resulted in at least two second degree burns among friends I know.

The big downsides to the french press are that a) it requires you to grind your own beans if you can't find a store that has an adjustable grinder and b) is not the most pleasant thing to clean and requires water to clean.

Some years ago I came across a sporting goods store that was going out of business. For dirt cheap, got from them a bunch of 12v aplliances incl. coffee grinder, cofee maker, blender, various mixers and food choppers. Today I just use mostly the coffee grinder. Usually grind and make enough coffee before starting underway as I hate using stale cofee, which for me means ground more than few minutes ago. Surprisingly cofee keeps well in a thermos and is still tastes fresh hours later. Must be the lack of oxigen I guess.

Double size stove top espresso maker, load up, boil it, add equal amount of hot water and presto 16oz of great coffee...... Or two espresso

yep, tea pot for heating water and cone drip into a thermos. Simple, small and easily stored.

Um, yeah, other than that I tend to agree with Zee. Melitta cone drip, #2 bamboo filter. Simple, clean, indestructible, cheap. I have two spares, 'cause you never know.

If I for some reason break it or forget it, cowboy coffee is always an alternative.



No ice? No problem...leave it out. It's stronger that way.

I don't like the french presses that leave the coffee in the bottom for hours........ so a thermal coffee press is out for me, a press into a thermos works but still prefer the stove top espresso maker........

I was going to mention this as well, although I've always called it camp coffee. Boil water, toss in coffee, boil more, when the grounds settle to the bottom it's ready. Can make it as strong or as weak as desired. Easy.
