Best local food that's easy on the kitty

Not sure if this thread has been done before and I see nothing recent so...

List a specific location and a local food that is abundant and cheap.

Here in the USVI: Mangoes and Star Fruit are super cheap and the quality is fantastic! Of course, with a little effort, lobster is free

In Turkey, the cheapest food is always whatever produce is in season. Always locally grown so selection is strictly limited to whatever is in season at the moment.
Right now, huge fresh beautiful peaches are about $1 per lb.
Heirloom tomatoes (DELICIOUS!!) are 50 cents per lb.
Several other types tomatoes about the same price; grape tomatoes a little higher.
Figs are reaching the end end of season, still available at 50 cents per lb.
Half-dozen varieties of apples just being picked; about 50 cents per lb.
And so on, and so on.

The very best local food in Turkey: red lentil and bulgur soup. Fabulous! And very easy to make.

In Mexico, the Taco stands are cheap and the good ones are way good. In El Salvador it was Pupusas. Everywhere seems to have cheap pizza. Right now back in the US its McDonalds Happy Meals

Being a San Diego kid growing up, believe me I miss some good taco stands. Spending 3 years in England didn't help the craving at all. At least before we moved here to the USVI we wintered in Texas l...

Judy, the same in Greece, but prices are not so cheap.

At least on several islands figs are so prolific that they are given away - I was in heaven in August on Tilos, I had my fill of warm ripe fruit picked straight off the tree. Back on board, figs halved and topped with Danish blue cheese and grilled were the icing on the cake .

Red lentil and orange soup is one of my favourites in winter. Red lentils are extremely hard to source here though (they are all brown) so I look forward to Turkey

Of course we have salmon, crab, steamer clams, and oysters in the PNW. . . but I think a most over-looked, abundant, and delicious meal can be reaped from the rocks: Blue Mussels.

Baja is stupid expensive, but on the mainland the cost of taco stands is indeed incredibly cheap.

Produce, especially non-US, is dirt cheap. 30lb of produce for $18 usd.

At the eastport fruit stand in Annapolis now buying fresh off the tree red apples for $1/pound. Also fresh sweet potatoes, figs, pumpkins and , of course, this being the US in the fall - sweet corn @ 25c.

Here in North Florida, and other places too, crown conchs are easy to find for free on any oyster bar, and because they are considered a pest, there are no limits.

They taste and cook just queen conchs that are found further south.
