Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

My staple Breakfast usually consists of a banana, cereal and whatever other fruit is available for not too much money and reasonably fresh.
I know of people who believe bananas are bad luck on boats. I know of one sailor who comes unglued just in the presence of bananas even when far from the water.
I like my simple breakfast routine, but have to give pause to ask...
#1. Why are bananas so cursed?
#2. How many other sailors out there are quite willing to risk the "bad luck" for the sake of good nutrition?
#3. What is the best way to store bananas on board?

#1. Women too! Seriously? Bad luck? Make your own luck.
#2. See above.
#3. Banana hammock. No, really, a swinging hammock keeps fruit fresh longer.

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

Can't answer all your questions but we are well aware of the banana curse.

With that said I didn't believe it since the banana crop is shipped all over the high seas.

We always carry bananas.

We store them in ,"green bags." Our particular brand probably came from Walmart and are called Debbie Meyer Green Bags.

We probably have plenty of bad luck but I usually attribute it to my poor planning and preparation. Not the bananas.

Bananas and a woman aboard usually, no bad luck, maybe they cancel each other out?

Appears that the bad luck myth is mostly fishing related:

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

First time I hear they bring bad luck. Must be some American tradition.

Dry bananas keep for ages without any extra measures (as long as you keep them dry!). Forego the flaked ones - buy whole dry ones. These are chewy and excellent food alone or in your morning oats.

Dried whole bananas are +++excellent stuff.

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

Had some friends with a trawler who always kept a banana plant aboard.
Worked great for storage lol - and cereal, daquiris, etc.

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

I've heard that Bananas are the best food to eat before doing any acrobatic flying,
because they taste the same coming back up.
I have no idea where or why, but I know many who if they see someone take a Banana out of their sack lunch act as if they had brought the Devil himself aboard.

Never seen a whole dried banana, but due to my job know more about bananas that I ever cared to, did you know almost all bananas sold are of one species, the Cavendish and it has been for lack of a better term under attack from a virus called Black Sigatoka. Better enjoy bananas while you can

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

Had 4 species of banana at my place in Hawai'i. Hung the stalks from the lanai by a small rope to the cut portion of the stalk and wrapped it with a towel to keep fruit flies off while it ripened. Hanging from the stalk kept from bruising the fruit. You could wrap it on the tree but that makes it more difficult to take on your boat (and gets your feet muddy when you go out to get the one banana you need). Don't recommend eating a complete stalk all at once (hence the need for a towel wrap).

Re: Bananas: Bad Luck or Good Eatin?

Bananas plus cereal, sugar and bread are bad luck. They cause obesity, diabetes and heart and vascular disease.

You will have better luck to live a longer life if you leave the bananas on the shop shelf

I used one of those, but after some rough seas over three or four days, I had a pulpy mess on my hands from the hammock swinging out and back and hitting various things. Something to watch out for.

Bananas on a boat, very bad luck. Look at this ship carrying Bananas to the UK, leaning over cargo shifted.
