My heavy stuff expands to fill all available space! P.S. Am looking forward to reading the Caribbean cookbook you just sent. Did it have anything on solar ovens?

Solar Ovens

We're full time cruisers with a solar oven. Don't expect it to work well if you're at anchor (the boat swings and positions it out of the direct sun). Cut your veggies small so they will cook all the way, full size carrots, potatoes, etc.. will not completely cook if not pointed directly at the sun AND you move the oven to keep it pointed. You may end up having to microwave if you use it at anchor, otherwise it works well.

This thread turned out great! Lots and lots of good feedback, experiences and ideas so I'm definitely going to try this and will keep you all posted on how it goes. I'm expecting very interesting things.

Aparrotwind - what kind of solar oven are you using? Would you mind sharing a pic of it with us?

I have built several, they all work well for most things. Baked goods, veggies, and fish do well but I don,t like them for a thick cut of meat however I am perhaps too demanding when it comes to kitchen equipment. I have a small one 2'x2' for backpacking, and made a large one 2'x6' for some Hippie friends in northern California. I was lucky enough to have a mother who is into clean energy, her house is off grid except for H2O. I ended up putting in the solar panels (Polycrystalline for power and an indirect circulation system for heating water) when I found the hippies who were putting them in getting high on the job. I don't care if you puff herb, but if you want to be high at work get a job at a head shop or a CD store or wait until you don't have to use power tools. Sorry for the rant, Solar cookies are the best!!!!

I think it's called The Hot Pot and we bought it from IGAI (?) - sorry, it's been a few cruising miles back since we purchased.
