Re: Anyone trailing a handline in the PNW for Salmon?

I alway's drag a float line in season. I use a float line sold by Englund Marine. There 70' w/ a 10' heavy leader and pull a tuna jig. They come w/ a rubber snubber that does replace the rod. Alway's catch fish, tuna or salmon w/ the tuna jig. Just drag them till the fight is gone and pull in dinner, no blood or mess. Try it ,you'll like it....Michael..

Re: Anyone trailing a handline in the PNW for Salmon?

Ran a successful live aboard sports fishing business years ago in BC.
Successful because my guests always caught their limit.

Short answer…use a rod to play the fish or you will loose more than you land.

Proven Techniques:
Fish the change of lights and change of tides… working about 20 ft from tide lines
Slower spin and deeper for Chinnook… faster spin and shallower for Coho
Best to use frozen herring on a leader with swivel.
Wet hands so as to protect herring scales
Don’t bother with flashers unless using artificial lures
Secret is to make trailing hook…. super sharp as this will wrap around and snag bumping salmon
Squeeze some rubbing alcohol in gills to kill salmon
This video shows best rigging set-up and the photos should whet your appetite.
