Any Coffee Drinkers ?

Hello everyone!
My name is Devin and I am a design student in Boston. Recently my mother brought to my attention her lack of space for a coffee maker when packing for a month long sailing trip with her boyfriend. This got me thinking about designing a coffee maker specific for boats. I was hoping to get some peoples opinions on this idea and also how you currently brew coffee while sailing? What kind of boat? Any problems you have with your current method or anything you would want improved on. Any information would be wonderful! Thanks guys

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

I use a french press. $9.99 at bed bath and beyond. A chemex is another viable option on a boat. The french press is pretty easy to use, and the riskiest moment is when you pour near-boiling water into it.

OK, I only drink two cups a day, usually but...

When I lived aboard I would run the gen once a week so I could run the electric roaster. In addition to a french press I also use an electric espresso maker. I do have a marvelous hand grinder though ...

I like coffee! (don't get me started on beer).

Electricity is the key mate.... we need a great expresso machine that runs on about 1 amp per cup please.......also because those little cuppie things are so expensive... it should make a fantastic cup of coffee form coal... or diesel....... or salt water.... r cheap central american coffee beans!

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

Uhm, I use toddy. I do a cold brewed coffee, then I use the concentrate in the amounts I like for strength for a cup of coffee and add hot water. Love the stuff, there is none of the oily stuff or the acids that you get with hot brewed coffee. Try toddymaker.com and check out the unit there. About 20 bucks, give or take and you brew a 1 pound bag of coffee for any where from 12-24 hours depending on how strong you want the concentrate. I have two types in my fridge ready to make a cup of java, one is New Orleans blend and the other is dark roast. Just remember that flavored coffee does not do well with this method. But, I love it!

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

Wow thanks for all the great info already guys! So to all the espesso and press guys, are you guys satisfied with this method? Anything you would like to change (crazy ideas too).
Hummingway, did you have any issues running the electric espresso machine?
I was looking into avenues that would make this unit self powered, so Maybe not 1 amp a cup but no draw from the boats system...
Thanks Will Ill check out that Toddy!

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

It's a small one. It runs fine off my inverter. Does two espresso or one americano at a time.

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

I guess I carry particular weight in this discussion considering I spend 15 hours a week making coffee for people. I still like the french press. It fits in with my KISS philosophy of boating. It also makes a great cuppa. Honestly better than drip machines are capable of. Different, but better. I think that full on espresso machines and drip coffeemakers are overkill on the boat. If you can't pull it off with a press, a chemex, or a moka pot, you aren't trying hard enough.

I would probably buy a moka pot if I could find one in stainless.

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

I keep everything simple and light. Small stainless steel coffee pot, propane, stove, and ground dark roast coffee.

Put 2 cups rainwater in pot. Put in a scoop of coffee. Bring to brief boil. Cool and settle for a minute. Pour. There's a few grounds at the bottom of the cup sometimes. So what? I'm not a sissy.

No filters, no electricity, no goofy apparatus. Simple.

Re: Any coffee drinkers?

Cowboy coffee. Nothing wrong with that. A piece of eggshell will help the grounds sink in the pot.

That's not an issue with the stainless steel variety

Egg coffee? You just crack the whole dang egg in there, with the shell.
