Aeropress Help Needed Please

Rather than sipping on freshly brewed coffee in bed this morning, I spent a fruitless hour searching for the screw on end to my Aeropress . I can only think it was thrown away with the rubbish yesterday .

I will not have an address to use again until January and I have developed an addiction to Aeropress coffee, so my darling husband is trying to make me a replacement base from aluminium, stainless steel and plywood.

Could someone with an Aeropress please measure the diameter of the filtering holes in the screw on base? It would also be helpful to know the approximate number of holes or to see a photo of the base.

Thanks in advance .

Interesting that it says in the product description...

"Lost or misplaced your filter cap? Don't fret. It happens to a lot of people."

Sorry for your loss, seaworthy....

Many thanks.
97 holes, estimated size 3.7 mm.

I will post a photo of the new base and keep my fingers crossed that it is successful.

Later in the year I'll hunt and see where bases are available in the UK and order a spare complete unit as well as a replacement base.

I was devastated .

Best coffee I have had on board for seven years. I started pondering: is it better to have loved and lost or never to have loved at all?

The chief engineer on board is working hard on a solution.

Re: Aeropress Help Needed Please

In a mad rush to get our stuff together for a short cruise one year, we forgot some Aeropress bits, including the cap, and ended up mooching our morning coffee from fellow cruisers.

Such a predicament is why we now use a camping-style drip (melitta) type coffee maker aboard. Only one piece and a box of filters to find and pack, and it's certainly less fiddly in the morning.

For now, the Aeropress serves at home. Maybe if we are more diligent about storing the Aeropress pieces better, it will find its way aboard again.

If I had the power I would use a Nespresso machine. I have experimented with all sorts of systems on board and think the Aeropress comes in second place and an espresso pot in third. For me, a French press is next, then a simple paper filter system follows.

All vastly better than instant coffee, although lots of people are perfectly content with that and think coffee fanatics are nutty .

PS Posting to the sound of holes drilling at 9:20 pm .

My chief engineer has done a brilliant job . The replacement 'cap' works flawlessly.

The system comprises a piece of thick ply with a hole drilled in the centre just a touch larger than the main body of the Aeropress, so that it sits on the flange at the base. Four bolts with wing nuts secure this to a plate of aluminium. 76 3.2mm holes have been drilled to correspond with the centre of the plunger.

The aluminium sheet is smooth, so the contact is good, but the paper acts as a gasket. The trick is to tighten the wing nuts sufficiently to stop any leakage at the sides without overdoing it and cracking the plastic flange.
