SWMBO is addicted to the stuff, she can't get up in the morning without a swig of this life-giving elixir, let alone take a night watch without several mugfulls. The problem is that our supplies of Yorkshire Tea are running low.

Suggestions of a suitable substitute available in Nova Scotia are requested. Anything de-caffinated, green, herbal, weak and wishy-washy are NOT what is required.

If you don't have access to your favorite home brand I think Twinnings is the best of the commercially available brands. Try the local market.

You might look for a local health food store. They often have a selection of bulk tea, usually better than the boxed stuff.

The most popular teas in Canada tend to be Tetley or Red Rose. They should be available in any grocery store.

I like PG Tips as well. Check the upscale grocers....

I'm a Yorkshireman trapped in the mountains of West Virginia. Most acceptable version I've found is Red Rose as mentioned earlier. The Tetleys just doesn't taste right somehow. Always check the box is for proper tea though and has'nt got that evil orange stuff in it they love so much here bleh. Hopefully I'll be sat on a boat in Virginia in a couple of weeks and will have a load of Red Rose stocked.

Twinings Irish Breakfast blend, LOOSE, not bags. Usually comes in tins. Around here we get tea from Iraq but in Canada, Twinings or Red Rose (but NOT bags as they're just floor sweepings).

Wow. I'm getting a tea education on a sail forum. So, as a brewed ice tea drinker, does all of this (not in bags/loose only, none of that orange pekot junk) apply for me as well? Will my ice tea be better for it?

Probably not. Pouring it over ice ruins tea in several ways, including by weakening it. "Proper" tea is hot and frankly, hot tea on a hot day is very refreshing, believe it or not. Icing tea is like adding coke to scotch.

Well, the general opinion of many tea drinkers is that bagged tea is a last ditch option...

I carry a few bags in my wallet (constant comment) so when stuck somewhere they think Liptons is actually tea, not sawdust and floor sweepings, I can brew a cup that I can actually drink.

Orange pekoe like most other traditional blends, earl grey, jasmine, english breakfast, is just a matter of taste. I quite like some orange pekoes and love many earl greys (but not all).

Get what ya like... and if you haven't tried loose leaf tea; live life large and give it a whirl!

Just remember to brew it strong!

Well, guess I'll have to be improper, wait, it appears I am already improper! lol The coke to scotch thing is lost on me, never had scotch, but I get that it's not something to want to mix. I am confused tho... since I'm ruining my tea by icing it down, would it taste lest ruined by using better tea, or should I just give up and start mixing it with dirty dishwater? Oh, and I use decaf, because I can't do caffeine, so maybe I should strain the dishwater first? Or just give it all up and grab the broom and dustpan...... (oh! a possible "out"! I chill my tea, not poured over ice! Am I worth saving?)

And saying that icing tea is bad is like saying an automatic transmission is bad. You may prefer a stick (I do) but nuttin wrong with driving an automatic (I do ; -)

Thanks Sarafina! After hearing about loose teas though, I think I will give some a go, life's too short not to try new things. Might not get into hot tea, but there appears to be a flavor experience to be had, and tea horizons to broaden.

Even though I live in Florida, I do buy coffee from this group in Annapolis. They also specialize in tea. I can't say I've bought their teas since the the Twinning or Bigelow work fine for me. Even their coffee I reserve for special occasions with the French Press. Nevertheless, they have quite a variety and ship extremely fast, at least to U.S. addresses.
