Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
Those small butane stoves are also available in Aust. have used them camping and for power blackouts during cyclone season. A cartridge does a lot of cooking.
Beaut for cooking, lots of heat (BTU's), cheap about $15 for stove and 4 canister pack of refills around $6. made in China i think and expect available anywhere in world. good backup for crusing any easily taken ashore for cooking.
Go with the butane stove.

FWIW have also been looking at Bucket based Stoves recently......I have an Origo onboard, backed up by a simple folding Camping Gaz single burner. But something else would be nice........over here firewood easy enough to collect (aka FREE!) and as the boat will be moored next to a 16th Century fort plenty of (quiet) nooks and crannies ashore to set up (and leave for a few hours - we are pretty honest around here ) - was thinking more for stuff that takes time to cook - both to save money and cut down on refueling trips (No electric power).
Time will tell on how that works out..........

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
Bought a pack of twelve butane canisters for just under AU$13 today from a national variety store. They are readily available throughout Australia at a variety of places some much dearer than others.

its hard not to like the bucket...alcohol or wood and you can hang it on stern rail...its simply to practicle to ignor...dont care what it looks like (my girl came home with a nice budweiser bucket)
to be honest this bucket works better then all my stove, mostly because the burner is protected from draft and thers much less heat lost...iv played with it all week and even my wife like it...she want me to build a nicer looking one then this five minuts pronto.
I see no reasons not to have one onboard.
cheers

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
I use 91% isopropyl for my little camp stove and for the beer can stoves. It works quite well and is similar to Coleman white gas in price.

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
Automotive HEET works quite well too. Its methyl alcohol, works better than Iso IMHO

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
HEET comes in red bottles and yellow bottles. One is almost pure methyl and is the highest BTU alcohol I know of. The other one isn't so good. The problem is I can't remember which is the good one! I guess if you read the labels you can figure it out.

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
I have been thinking: why not use a 1 quart paint can for the actual stove part? Seals up nice, basically heatproof! Would it be too much trouble to open and close it all the time?
Also, the yellow stuff is the good stuff. Red is sooty.

Re: $3 DIY Alcohol Stove
I was thinking of the cost, mostly. 91% iso is pretty cheap, I watch for sales and have bought it for $1.19 a quart. So....$4.76/gallon. White gas is usually $12-16/gallon around here(Midwest). So btu wise pretty similar in cost, I think.
