12 Volt Kettles?

Hello all,

I'm finding that I have a lot of spare power from the solar setup on my boat.
Is there a way to use this for hot drinks? Any 12volt kettles out there?

I've done some searches but not much comes back.

RV accessories stores have lots of 12VDC stuff. Truck stops also carry lots.

Thanks, yeah I'll have to look in those type places. Just worried that the ones I've seen online all get really bad ratings.

Just use a 120vac kettle with your inverter.

If you have an inverter of at least 1000 watts I would go with a hot plate then you can use it for other things too. if you have a pure sine wave inverter you can use an induction cooktop they're very efficient. Depending on how much extra electricity I have I will bring my pressure cooker up to pressure using propane and then switch it to electric to simmer

There is a heck amount of amperage associated with a 12 volt kettle. One commentator suggested the water would evaporate before it boiled.

On the rare occasion that I use a microwave (800 watts), I run the engine at 1000 rpm and use the inverter.

Get a good old fashioned kettle for the cooktop.

Any electric cooktops I have used run off generators.

My 750 watt hot plate uses about 70 amps and takes about 4 minutes to boil a cup of water. Which works out to less than 5amp hours per boiling cup of water.

What size of circuit breaker / fuse do you use?

What gauge of wire?

100 amp fuse 4 gauge wire. In normal use the inverter will shut down if overloaded. It's important to keep the wire runs the shortest possible. but don't put it over the battery bank if they're standard lead acid the fumes are harmful for the electronics. And a possible fire hazard.
