Reading this thread makes me think of the Farallons race that is talked about elsewhere on CF. Same race committee mentality, probably same skipper mentality, just a tragic end to the second one.____Grant.

I think its no so much about seaman ship as poor race planning. Why would organisers put a race pack with deep keels through a dangerous passage. I have already read that the racers had a choice. But racers turns psycho (myself included) once the gun starts and will follow the lead boat through a sea battle if they had to.

I think that's a path that there's no end to. On other discussions about the recent Farallon accident some people are saying the race should not be around the island. Any race near or around any landmark is going to have shallows. People run aground on the Smith Island and Blakely rocks race in our area. I've been on boats short tacking behind a point to avoid current where it's not uncommon for keels to touch the bottom before tacking. For every safety rule you make the racer will find another thing to do to take it to the edge.

Eventually you would be down to rules like no spinnakers in more the 10 knots of wind, and cancelling races in more than 15 knots. Or just make it virtual and sit at home in front of your computer, or ban racing altogether.

Other than the fact that the gamble(s) didn't pay off, i don't see what the problem is...

In another life i used to race sprintcars, you should have seen some of the costly bad moves/decisions i made in an effort to get the upper hand....i can fit through that gap

It's only racing folks....

It's only racing folks....

I used to race moto-X and formula V and could not get insurance on those vehicles. The difference is that club racers do have insurance (usually) and we all pay higher premiums to pay for their fancy little flags and shiny trophies.

Local boat yards do a nice line in repair work afterwards and the owners with more money than they know what to do with get a great story to tell in the bar afterwards. Everyone's happy, even the second owner who got a bargain yacht at a really good price, err oh well can't please everyone.

If you aren't taken a chance in racing then you are known as the loser. I heard that it was the skipper's choice to go between those rocks instead of going around. Somebody thought they could make it and others naturally followed even though they had deepr keels.
Amazing what racing does to folks. Not just men but women too.
I feel sorry for the boats.

Those of you in America should like the Tjörn Runt as it seems to be the Nascar of yacht racing. Lot's of action and crashes happening right in front of the spectators.

Hitting rocks is par for the course when sailing the Stockholm or west coast archipelagos.

I'd never heard of the race until last year when a friend posted a photo of it on Facebook. I'd love to go to watch it this year except I will be in Greece keeping well clear of rocks.
