Unless you are going to do some serious sailing, by spending weeks at sea in a given year, I would consider chartering from owners. Most boat owners are eager to charter
their boats, PROVIDED that you can prove to them your knowledge (certification & seamanship experience) in addition to financial responsibility (insurability risk). It does not make any financial sense to buy a boat then sailing it for just a few weeks in a year; it is not a cost effective undertaking. Rearranged differently...if you plan on sailing less than 9 weeks per year, consider chartering; about 10% of the actual cost of a purchased sailboat PLUS uncertainty fudge factor.
