That would be 15 foot to 150 foot. Sorry, I couldn't resist. That is a question with some pretty broad answers without a lot more specifics.

Length is a minor factor in what might be considered a seaworthy boat. The skipper and crew are the greatest factors when it comes to safety. The design of the boat and its safety equipment irrespective of its length is the second greatest factor.

There are many relatively safe boats in the 25 to 35 foot range that are suitable for one person. Personally, I would not consider one under 25 feet just for comforts sake. A boat over 35 feet would probably be more than one person needs unless you are one who insists on all the creature comforts. This is just my very rough estimate. Others will have ideas that are probably just as valid.

There really is not an answer for what length is safe.

How many adults, kids?
What level of comfort do you desire?
My Aunt and Uncle sailed from Seattle to various points in Alaska several years in a row with 2 small kids on a 25 foot boat. When I see the photos I always have the same reaction. I couldn't or wouldn't do that!
They loved every minute of it.

I am looking to have about 2-4 people on the boat. Any recommendations on reliable brands? Thanks

Have you ever sailed before? What time of year are you going? What is your budget? Ah, hell with it. Just get an Island Packet. I saw one at the Long Beach boat show for about $560K.

Good advice, AV!

Actually, the "how long" topic has had quite a bit of play here. Try using the "Google" search engine in the "little" pull-down "Search" menu on the blue nav bar above the thread. You'll be amazed at how much has been posted here on that topic.

Hi Hud,
The Island Packet blew me away. A stunner with equipment on board that I wouldn't dream of taking until I was 50 miles offshore and wished I'd had it. I was really glad they brought it to the show and let us take a look around.
