Mark I asked this before of your example (and to be honest, can;t remember 100% whether or not you answered -but I don;t think so - of course could be wrong). Can you explain to me how a mayday announcement is going to get those kids treatment faster than a panpan?

Just a little technical correction.

Canada is one of the NATIONS of the Americas. We are NOT one of the states of the US. We actually get to fly our own flag. It's that maple leaf thingy

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Carsten- a lot of people are very interested in using the system correctly. Please do not be dismayed.

Sorry I am just catching up on this thread.
Jammer if you break you leg with me. I will get you to a stable position immediately, treat for shock, see if you are bleeding from a vessel, ether internally or externally, evaluate for nerve or vessel impingement to affected leg ( and brace or set leg to resume flow or sensation) Get you warm, IV started, and crew making best speed for port.
Then I would call- and believe me, I would get their attention.
We are spoiled around Washington area...all I have to do is ask for the Coast Guard and they are on it like flies on butter. But what I think people are worried about here is that the situation be treated seriously. We can both agree that it is not a problem in the PNW.

Yea, I'm getting older and more cautious, but I now wear a PFD when going out or working alone on deck in the the marina. I had a marina neighbor disappear last winter with no sign, boat open, car keys in the cabin, car in the parking lot... concluded he fell overboard and maybe hit his head... couple weeks later fellow fell in the Columbia river while peeing off the end of the dock at night, even with people around, he disappeared into the dark.

Canada is definitely not part of the USA.
They are not paranoid.
They do not have homeland security to bother every Canadian coming across the border.
They do not have a president inviting all of south america to come north.
There are some days I want to sail to Canada and never come back.
And the bottom line...
Cruising in Canada is nicer.

Re: What Justifies a "MAYDAY"?

When I read the book "Fatal Storm", about the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race, I was surprised just how long many of the sailors held out before calling a MAYDAY. And even after they called, many agreed to wait until the other sailors in more serious danger than them were lifted to safety.

It gave me a whole different concept on the meaning of MAYDAY and when you should call it.

I've asked it more than twice too and I just don't get an answer. It's almost as if a 'mayday' is magical and will bring a trauma team to the boat.

And this whole idea that somehow what the international regulations call an 'urgency' call has been redefined into an 'advisory' call by some is simply strange.

And the claim that 'lives are considered more important now than in the past', really

Because people respond to Maydays more and faster than Pan Pan.

Getting into Canada isn't a problem. You may not need any ID by land.

To get back into the U.S., however, you will need a passport. The days of a driver's license are over.

Mark, no wry humor?

You nailed it. I might just listen to a pan pan. But would change course for a Mayday if I had something to offer, eg. pull someone out of the water. A heart attack probably not, I would just be in the way and muddy the water?

DISTRESS: the radio-telephone distress signal MAYDAY is used to

From the NZ Maritime Safety Radio Handbook.
Despite what's being often quoted. That's pretty much the same as the Australian position.
