Ain't that a bitch. Made friends with a Canadian yours ago that thought it should be a state. I'll bet he has changed his mind? If he had as much sense as I gave him credit for.

I knew this. I just wanted to see how long it would take for a Canadian to challenge it. I also thought the yanks would go quite on it.

It's bit like Australia's state of New Zealand.

How much more evidence will we need before we conclude that the "standard" is different, depending on location and local politics?

Different standards mean, by definition, that there is no standard. I've seen the same thing in local laws about gas cylinder labels, over-the-road trucking equipment and prescription medication. It's why we license attorneys, physicians and contractors locally.

Since Newt was rude enough to bring immigrants into a thread that had nothing to do with them, remember that to us, you're the descendant of illegal immigrants, Newt. And have a nice day.

Re: What Justifies a "MAYDAY"?

This morning I've read through all the posts on this subject. It's been interesting reading again. I'm going to attempt a summary of what seems to be the main points.

1. There is an International Standard which most countries have signed and agreed to. Despite this, Sovereign Nations have decided to further 'interpret' the International Standard and as a result there is some discrepancy's from nation to nation.

2. Sailors should all equate themselves with the expectations of what constitutes a 'mayday' and an 'urgency' call in the area they are sailing in.

3. Canada is not a state of the US.

These seem to be the two main points. In addition to above there are a few posters who seem to think it's okay to ignore the local requirements and only go with what they believe should be the case. I guess this is not that big a problem, unless it get's you fined for not following a local requirement. Certainly in Australia, you will not ever be in trouble for calling a mayday when you should be call an urgency call.

#139 ......... I go by the ' when in Rome'

With the inter web , we have no excuse of 'not knowing '

I think it's our responsibility , that if we want to be in someone else's playground we should know its local rules, if in international waters we stand under our own flag or at least it's agreements with the rest of the world .

I think this is where the problem is. At least in Australia, New Zealand and probably the UK, people will respond just as quick to a Pan Pan as a mayday. The idea that a pan pan is somehow inferior is I think a concern and does not even seem to fit with the International regulation. (I'll avoid calling it a standard).

Some a claiming a 'pan pan' is simply a 'notification' which is so clearly wrong in what it appears everywhere. But if this is what people think of a Pan Pan then no wonder they elect to call Mayday's even for medical alerts.

Re: What Justifies a "MAYDAY"?

The only thing that I see that this thread show in common is that the Captain/master is the only one authorized to transmit or authorize transmission of a mayday. I guess it just sucks to be the crew if the Captain is the first to go.

Nope, those days are long gone both ways on the border. All border officials on both sides seem to view everyone with suspicion. The good old days are gone.

And besides which, ifn yer talkin' abut yer southern boys, that would be 'all y'all.

Or at least a school teacher who grew up in Alabama gave us an hour long lecture of the correct grammatical use of y'all versus all y'all.

All I could say was , "How aboot that".

I noticed you were correct in using the past tense.

Re: What Justifies a "MAYDAY"?

If I ever venture out of home waters, it seems to me that finding out how the locals do things would be a wise thing to do. Especially since some of the weirdest things are law in other places.
