So, I read the BoatUS Towing Dispatch center gets over 70,000 calls for assistance p.a.

How come the Govt Employees get all the free publicity.

They get free publicity in the local newspaper, which is sometimes strapped for news.

The Savanna Morning News must be desperate for content to include that. Pretty routine stuff.

A few weeks ago I was headed out from Manhasset Bay to go down the East River and heard a mayday call on 16. CG responded and the caller gave his coordinates, said he had hit something in his 50í Silverton and was taking on water fast. Stated he was in unfamiliar waters but was in a marked channel. A moment later I realized I was less than a mile from him and spotted him visually. He was right on top of the rock pile inshore of Stepping Stones Light. Itís not called that for nothing and is clearly marked on the chart. Within 15 minutes there were two CG boats, two police boats, TowBoatUS, and two helicopters on scene. It was nuts. I doubt it made any paper lol.

What is PA?
One answer is that Boat US is commercial and are paid for their services, and if itís nasty or dangerous, they say no thank you and let the Coasties go out.
Iím surprised USCG towed this one, usually they will turn over a simple tow to Boat US or Seatow as they are not allowed to compete with the private sector.

Each year. 70,000 calls per annum.

54% are mechanical breakdowns.

Usually you hear the CG and tow outfits coordinating on VHF. Possibly none of the tow guys were close/available and bad weather was headed in. The CG probably had a good reason to throw them a rope.

I understand, and the USCG used to tow all of the time, however now that there are Commercial Tow agencies, I believe they must first be offered and turn the job down.
That is a double edged sword of course.

Right. If the tow is in any way inconvenient for them, they offer to call the CG for you.

I can't say they ALWAYS do this, but I can personally vouch for three times that TowBoat US has. Twice we resolved the problem with the boat I was on, once we ended up having to call SeaTow, who were happy to come out, a very long way.

Re: USCG saves 6

USCG stats say 4188 lives saved in 2017.

I wonder if these 6 go down as lives saved ?
