Under the radar.....

In July, 70 year old Jeanne Socrates quietly finished a SOLO, NONSTOP circumnavigation, completing her trip in British Columbia.
This was her third attempt, the last one ended on the beach in Mexico and lost her boat only about 60 miles from completing the circumnavigation. Not to be deterred she got another Najad 380.
She sailed a fin keeled Najad 380, both times. No propulsion from the engine allowed. Failures along the way were many including mainsail track issues, a broken shroud, the life raft lost, steering vane breaks and various electronics problems.
Reportedly she’s already headed to Mexico for the winter….. and then there's those of us spending our time on CF....

Is there rules somewhere saying that engines are not allowed or is this just how she did it? That's pretty cool to be able to go out and do that.

Re: Under the radar.....

And this was a solo nonstop circumnavigation around the great capes (Cape Horn, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin):

Quite a voyage, and quite a sailor! I met her in Victoria (Vancouver Island) the morning she completed her voyage. The boat definitely had been through a lot, with her radar broken off the stern pole and lashed to one side, etc. She had definitely gotten the spreaders wet a couple of times. But she was in good spirits and willing to talk to all the well-wishers.

Hooray for Jeanne!

I guess that's just the record she wanted to set. She talked about having to sail in the Straight of Juan De Fuca amongst the traffic and currents to finish the last few hours....

Good for her. I have a whole lot more respect for those who just go out and do it than I do for the ones who try to get their 15 minutes of fame by making it a media event.

Re: Under the radar.....

We had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Jeanne when, on her last unsuccessful attempt, she came into Hobart for some repairs. Even though she was bitterly disappointed by the turn of events she was affable, approachable and fun to be around. We maintained contact via ham radio for much of her later sailing, and saluted her as she passed Tasmania again on this successful attempt.

We are pleased that having accomplished her RTW goals she is now rejoining the more normal cruising community. Hope to encounter her again under better circumstances.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Under the radar.....

Times have really changed, seems these days women like the Gal that swam to Cuba and this Gal sailing around the world via the capes are the leading force of women that are showing most men who really has the balls.
