March '04.. got the **** kicked outa me NE of Bermuda so headed back to Oriental.. broke and no where else to go where I could get my boat on the hard for a year..
'05 went back and tried again early May.. got **** kicked again but this time kept going.. had to hand steer from N of Bermuda to the Azores then UK.. boat was an H37c and I was solo both times.
What they basically lacked was deep water experience and storm conditions.. they'll have learnt a thing or 2 out there which will hold them in good stead if they/he has another go.

I read the thread last week, agreed with all the comments but didn't post thinking as a fellow Aussie, I would give them the benefit of the doubt but knowing I would hear more about them sooner rather than later.

Lo and behold, driving to work today there got a mention on the new bulletin about being rescued from a storm and a wild seas and winched up by the US Coast Guard. I shook my head and thought they were definite Darwin Award material.

Some thoughts:
Another example of unqualified people(I did not say sailors) with no skills, ability or experience being rescued at a large cost to the American taxpayer. It is the continuation of these travesties that will push our government to require licensing(which will probably be as effective as automobile drivers' licenses to control safe driving) and perhaps further restrict the ability of qualified people to cruise freely and in adverse conditions(to be judged by the government?).
The positive element of this journey is that upon advise of some revered members of this Forum, they had wisely budgeted approximately $1000. for the proposed adventure which works out to something like $500. per month.
There are eight million stories in the Naked City . . . this has been one of them.

No.. these events I feel are viewed as beneficial..

Seriously tho'.. the CG does not exist to save folk.. its just an adjunct service they provide.. and we provide real life training experience.. as close as they can get to 'Under Fire' so to speak.
Its a State arm of one of the more aggressive military countries in the World with 2 competitors and a Young Upstart..
What was used in that rescue would have likely been used in an exercise instead at a later date anyway had they not been out there..
As to the rescuers risking their lives..
I thought that's why they signed the dotted line and took the schilling.. sorry.. silver $..

Dying for a hero or an Idiot.. no difference.. dead is dead..

Have followed these two guys for some time and found their plan a bit flawed, result was as expected, sorry about the tax dollars , on the other hand maybe we should go back and live in caves.

I'll post again without accidentally hitting the tiny send button with my large finger ..,, my hope is that the two fortunate sailors who survived a storm by rescue will now engage themselves to educate others of the dangers and risks when sailing in storms, to plan better, to think of practices to follow to reduce risk, to support the CG, and to help other sailors.

It's great to know they are alive..
