While the guy has refused to give up, one has to ask how much taxpayer dollar has been spent in rescuing him, repeatedly. One also has to ask whether he has been simply unlucky, or whether he has gone to sea unprepared or whether his choice of vessel has been appropriate for oceanic crossings, or whether he has the necessary seamanship skills.

Reading the article this guy just has bad luck (or always takes bad boats).

I like that he has a book "Sailing Alone Across the Atlantic" since he is a 4 time failure at it now.

He has tried and failed 4 times in a row, I wonder what percent of other boats try and don't make it? Bet he is really messing up the stats.

To be fair the guy has more experience by now than someone who did it successfully, even twice. But he definitely adds some validity to the belief in a Jonah.

We could make a lot of excuses for him, but ... a hurricane? in 2005? He didn't know there was a hurricane out there in 2005? Not 1705, but 2005?

I think tenacity needs to be coupled with planning and skill. Planning for weather comes to mind ...

Yeah. Sounds like a lot more than just bad luck to me.

Lots of people do this successfully, the very first time, every year. They plan and prepare, though. Doesn't really sound like this guy is doing that.

Well...look at it this way...if bad luck is about odds and this guy has been rescued 4 times, then it increases the likelihood for the rest of us having a successful crossing...
