Re: Trans atlantic crossing in a single engine cat ?

Hoezit Dawie,
There is no significant difference - you shall be going with current and wind so shall can have a great trip. A lot depends on what you rely upon for recharging the batteries. If you use the motor for recharging with a standard alternator you'll likely be running your engine a lot and rather inefficiently. This can result in issues - and is where the second engine can be useful. We motor our cat on a single engine, only use both motors together very rarely. We left Cape Town in 1995 on a cat and spent years in the Indian Ocean before a Red Sea transit to the Med. & then on the Caribbean, and back to SA. We have also subsequently done CT to the Caribbean, over to the Med and back to the Indian Ocean. Each done a few times and the number of times we have used both engines together is very rare - through the Suez Canal being the only regular times. The single engined Prout 38 is great solid cruising boat. Good luck.
