Also something I will look into seriously in the years to come is a kite as a means of alternate propulsion. Yes not for everyone but as a kiteboarder I am convinced this is a possibility (along with commercial shipping).

regarding kites for propulsion - I saw an article a few years ago about a guy who was experimenting with using a large kite to move his roughly 40' catamaran. It was very cool.

They said they were in those conditions for 5 days prior to rescue.

I think one of articles mentioned they had life jackets with flash beacons activated which was crucial to recovering them once they went into the water - that was the preparation I was thinking about when I first read/ posted the link (too early) this morning. I'm not at all interested in dissing anyone involved, I am happy for these folks that enough stuff went right for them to live to tell the tale.

Not to say that most of the time couldn't have lucked through. But OP clearly didn't. You make your own luck - good and bad.

Perhaps the best lesson anyone can take from this thread is not to beleive the nonsense about a certain type of boat - as peddled for many years within this sub-forum. Usually by folk with a financial interest in selling "the dream" (the fantasy?).......or who simply have a screw loose .

When the Coast Guard directs Horizon to divert to perform such a rescue, who is responsible for the costs, Horizon, the Coasties, or those who are rescued?

The Globe and Mail is quoting the shipping line as saying they will absorb the costs as part of their obligations as mariners. Good for them.
