Re: Two men and boy rescued near Hawaii

Also something I will look into seriously in the years to come is a kite as a means of alternate propulsion. Yes not for everyone but as a kiteboarder I am convinced this is a possibility (along with commercial shipping).

....Agreed. But those were the conditions during the rescue. The demasting happened earlier. The news didn't say what the conditions were like when that happened.

Your pre-trip points are all good!

regarding kites for propulsion - I saw an article a few years ago about a guy who was experimenting with using a large kite to move his roughly 40' catamaran. It was very cool.

There are several companies selling kites for sailboats. Here's just one:
KiteShip - Pleasure Marine

They said they were in those conditions for 5 days prior to rescue.

Re: Three Canadian Sailors Rescued off Hawai

I think one of articles mentioned they had life jackets with flash beacons activated which was crucial to recovering them once they went into the water - that was the preparation I was thinking about when I first read/ posted the link (too early) this morning. I'm not at all interested in dissing anyone involved, I am happy for these folks that enough stuff went right for them to live to tell the tale.

Not to say that most of the time couldn't have lucked through. But OP clearly didn't. You make your own luck - good and bad.

Some of the above may appear harsh, but bluntness used for clarity.

Perhaps the best lesson anyone can take from this thread is not to beleive the nonsense about a certain type of boat - as peddled for many years within this sub-forum. Usually by folk with a financial interest in selling "the dream" (the fantasy?).......or who simply have a screw loose .

Re: Three Canadian Sailors Rescued off Hawai

It really sounds like the strobe light saved the child.

"The Horizon Reliance maneuvered and lowered a Jacobs’s ladder to conduct the rescue. A 29-year-old man was rescued at 2:30 a.m. by the crew of the Horizon Reliance, but the others, a 32-year-old man and 9-year-old boy, drifted away. Both were rescued at 3:20 am. All passengers aboard the sailboat were wearing lifejackets with strobe lights, which enabled rescuers to keep them in sight."

Strobe lights??? Well, the interview paints it in a different light.

This is a remarkably candid account.

The Globe and Mail is quoting the shipping line as saying they will absorb the costs as part of their obligations as mariners. Good for them.

I watched the entire interview. They were very clear that they all had on strobes.

Wow! That looks like a well maintained, ultra seaworthy vessel capable of crossing an ocean for sure.
