The Wrong Way

We're planning to leave Key West, head for the Yucatan and then to Guatemala and Panama.

Or we were- just got this email from a well-travelled guy:

"You know you're going the "wrong way" around the Carib? Have you looked at pilot charts showing the currents and winds? OK, I'm sure you have and I'm sure you know what you're doing. Still...

So of course we know nothing about the 'right' way around the Caribbean. We're barely qualified to navigate our way back to Miami. Can anyone point us toward more info?

Re: The Wrong Way

Probably means you were taking the current/wind on the bow, rather than letting it push you along. I don't know the local conditions; there's a big difference between 5-10 knots of wind "the wrong way" and 25 knots of wind "the wrong way". Same with current. The more there is, the more you generally want to go along with it.

Re: The Wrong Way

Lorenzo, We did the trip to Guatemala from the Keys and your only possible issue might be Guatemala to Providencia, and that is done all the time by sailors. Once you turn the corner at Honduras you will have beam seas and winds most of the way to Panama. You will have beam seas and winds all the way from the Yucatan to Guatemala most of the time. We had very little problems with currents once across the Stream and Yucatan Channel. There is no right or wrong way since running down island will give you lots of unfavorable conditions also. We much prefer the Western Caribbean. It is much cheaper, far less crowded and less hassle with officials. We documented the entire trip on our Sea Trek site. Chuck

Re: The Wrong Way

I would say that most boats leaving out of the GoM heading straight to Panama go that way.
