As others have already pointed out this is a solution for THAT
boat and that
dock. I could not do this from my after
helm position on my 36' sailboat and this would likely apply to most sailboats with a tiller as well.
I use a mid ship cleat on the
boat and take it around a post or a cleat to stop.. slow the boat. This works for most
fuel docks which have
dock cleats.
I use one
fuel dock with pilings and have to take a loop around the piling and use that to slow the boat and then some half hitches to secure it.
However I MUST leave the
helm and often the boat to get the line on the cleat. I always take the boat out of
gear and attempt this when making no way.... by giving a shot of reverse which will slow the boat and kick the stern toward the dock.
The
danger of going into a slip is the hitting the boat to one side or the dock in front with the bow. So the object is to go straight in and not have the bow or stern swing and stop the boat before the bow reaches the pier. Cross
wind and cross
current complicate this.... and so I use a
mooring,
anchor and a dink. I don't care for slips. They're expensive... no privacy... less ventilation and noisy neighbors are a few feet away. There are advantages, but the negatives outweigh them for me.
Clever device for his boat and his dock. YMMV
