Nice video, some of those standing waves in the brown water with the fishermen looked like the Columbia bank. If only we could get out there now...

Yeah... I suspect that fishing boat that keeps disappearing and coming back up is likely the C Bank.....

Coastal cruising wont get you our of this.. notice there is land behind the boats in much of the videos.. thats coastal..
when all the energy of the ocean is forced up the shelf to the coast, nasty things happens..
Its normal to see water like this on the patato patch outside of San Francisco but a few more miles out and the water get really calm..
I hate comming home for this one reason, I have to cross the SF bar to get to calmer water.. think its about the same on the Columbia River Bar..

Columbia River bar is much worse. Check out the Washington and Oregon Bar Reports: U.S. Coast Guard Bar Observations

But I agree with you. In most places the coastal waters are more treacherous than the deep seas. On the other hand, there's always the Drake Passage:

Wheww, for a minute Paul, I thought it was going to be windy. Looks like you weren't even heaved too...
And a pilothouse...sissies.

That video should make you realize the value of really clean tanks. A clogged filter in those conditions could be fatal. The Ocean Blue is a hell of a lot safer than trying to get back to port in the wrong conditions. _____Grant.

I would never willingly be out there in those conditions. I guess the southern ocean will just have to wait for someone else.
(and my tank is clean )

Re: So you want to sail the ocean blue?

The interesting thing is that just a few miles farther out from whatever bar you are trying to cross, the ocean is probably just a little rough. I am not commenting on the Southern Ocean video, just what looks like the Columbia bar ( or any other nasty entrance). Stay out until conditions improve. ______Grant.
