all of the modern digital radars have programable "guard zones" linked to alarms, and are very conservative on power, that coupled with ais will give pretty fair warning.

all the single handed rtw race boats use this type of system these days

Re: So You Fall Asleep On Your Watch?

From the point the video begins showing the eminent collision, the larger vessel could not have maneuvered behind the trawler, not accelerated enough to ensure passing the trawler, nor slowed enough to avoid the collision.

The captain of the larger boat could not have imagined that this large commercial boat was under autopilot, and that there would be no one on board that would be able hear his extremely loud and prolonged horn blasts.

You see the puffs of black smoke coming from the trawler's stacks at the end... I can only guess that is pilot suddenly gunning his engines in reverse - it appears that he saved it from anything more than a nasty scrape.

It's absolutely absurd that a judge would have to remind fishing boat captains to stay on watch while under power!

Both vessels at fault. The master of the sailing ship ought to be cashiered too. Inexcusable.

one thing the new gen systems can't do is make decisions like drop the sails for the 50 knot squall coming thru,or change course because their is an island in the way......that takes human interaction

The master of the sailing ship was effectively operating what amounted to a train, on straight tracks, with a constant speed set. What should he have done again?

Re: So You Fall Asleep On Your Watch?

I just looked carefully again. The trawler is not showing any dayshapes for trawling, so the sailing ship is correct in assuming the trawler is the "give way" vessel.

From the looks of it, by the time it becomes relatively certain that the trawler is not going to observe the Colregs, the tall ship is out of options.

Rule 17b. Also looking at the angle of the waves, the sailing ship was on a beam reach. She made no attempt to luff up and reduce the impact of the collision. Plenty of staff to adjust sails. Plonker.

Re: So You Fall Asleep On Your Watch?

from what i have seen while cruising in the places i have cruised is that fishing vessels and shrimpers seem to aim at sailing boats. perverse, but true.
if i am in a fishing area, i will not fall asleep at watch even for 15 minuets.
no i will not set alarms--i will jeep a proper with with eyeballs.
there are many kinds of items found in oceans that do not conform to usa qnd yachting practices.
there are many folks on ocean without money, and no ais , no radar--some might have gps. some might have loran. some might not have much of anything but cultural history to back them up on their fishing quests. wood boats and pangas dont show up on much of our modern scanning tools.
must use your eyes to see stuff..
tallships are manned by newbies and paid crew. some donot realize they are not the gods gift they thought sailing boats are. not always having right of way is a new thing for many of us with sailing capability.
fishing boats dont really maneuver well while working . we must avoid them. is safer to just keep away than to push right of way issues which will only result in pain and torture of not only physical nature.
sailcruisers need to maintain an awareness of what is around self and in close proximity, as we are only ones to watch out for us.
i try to avoid everything i see a as much as possible. is not hard to do that.
when you have alleged right of way, isnt good to push it as you can well be in bigger trouble than if you just avoid the entire mess.

never ASSume.......anything....just avoid and live.

Right at that moment the other vessel turns to starboard to pass behind you. Result: You collide anyway.

That is probably how the Corvus J and the Baltic Ace came to run in to each other in the North Sea last december. The Baltic Ace was lost, together with 5 of its crew...

It's not that simple...
Your the stand on vessel and you steer to PORT !! wow you hit anybody yet ?

What should the skipper of the stand on vessel do if he comes to the conclusion that maintaining course will lead to a collision?

I've never been in such a situation myself. I treat anything bigger as if it was a train and always make course corrections early, and aim for passing behind the other vessel.

I've sailed on tall ships. Step one (on the ship I was one) when adjusting sails was "wake up the off watch". It's not a yacht.

Re: So You Fall Asleep On Your Watch?

Along the coast of the USA you have to assume that any fishing vessel is not paying any attention to anything except for the fishing or TV, in my experience. Yes, sometimes they respond to the radio, but a lot of times not. Also, at night they are lit up so brightly there is no way they would ever be able to get a visual on you--their night vision is completely gone, nobody is at the helm, and chances are very good they have music blaring at very high decibels. Quite a few years ago a large offshore trawler went aground directly below Beavertail lighthouse near Jamestown, RI. This is a big light tower, 64 feet high, with a sound signal, and everything. They must have been on autopilot with the lighthouse plugged in as a waypoint. It is up to you to avoid fishing vessels.
