Yeah - I helped a friend unpack his new sea anchor recently ...... Quite a mission!
It's easier and safer to get out of a sticky situation when hove to ...
This is one reason I would only deploy in a dire situation

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

I used one once on a trip from Brisbane to New Caledonia on my 10m cat
The new owner called us from Noumea and said a front was coming through, we were about 460nm out from Brisbane and 400nm from Noumea at the time.
As we had a sticky rudder bearing I took the opportunity to use the para-anchor and it was well worth it as we all had a good nights sleep, hot meals, we even had a couple of rum and cokes at sunset.
Wind gusted to around 50 knots during the night and the boats action was very stable.
GPS track showed us drifting back and forth around 0.5nm during the night.
We awoke well rested and ready to continue the next day, without it, we would have been exhausted, wet and uncomfortable and probably would have sustained some sail damage.

It was easy to deploy, just like the instructions say
Easy to retrieve, just like the instructions say
And I will gladly use one again

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

those of us with slow bricks for boats welcome 60 knots--even 70 was tolerable--- far enough to sea, with my autopilot, my boat does an excellent job. i rarely sleep more than 10 mins at a time in my boat when at sea--and i tolerate it reasonably--i used to have to do that at work. not a problem. if i KNOW the watchman is alert, oriented and able to remain awake for 4 hours, i will sleep that long. otherwise i am awake, checking...

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

Like the crews of ocean going freighters, I'd don't care about the irrational rules of landlubbers and armchair captains. On this boat it's 'safety first.' The original poster asked about sleeping on a sea anchor. Yes, people sleep with or without a sea anchor. It goes like this:

* Verify the situation is safe.
* Lay down.
* If you have the energy, some romantic play.
* Fall asleep.

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

My radar sees boats about 15 miles before I usually do and then the AIS seems to pick up anything wiht a tranponder at about 20 miles................ and both alarms are hooked to the stereo.... so it would wake the dead....... sleeping sailor that is.

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

i donot have ais hooked up via my garmin as yet-- have to do that fo canal i unnerstan.... but...... i never sleep at heavy traffic areas or near land. i donot sleep in shipping lnes. i do not sleep near sighted whales. i play with dolphins and fish in daylight. i might place a boat in irons if i feel my crew needs to sleep for a bit as i boat my fish,and onlt for boatingmy fish, so i dont have to awaken him from much needed sleep-- but i wont sleep in irons or in a state of storm or other mayhem. i sailed thru storms for most of the near year i was in gulf of mexico--our WIND SPEED IN THOSE WAS OVER 71 KTS, PER NOAA..lol-- very short respites from storm activity--was a good experience--was A SEIDELMANN 37-- i am glad we did that-- we kept our own watches of 4 on 4 off. there was no reason to change that pattern and all was well. we were pooped by a quartering sea at 0300 one nite-- so what--- water in , water out-- we worked very very hard AS AUTOHELM 4000 DIDNT WORK in seas over 6 ft or winds over 20 kts..LOL. on my trip to cabo san lucas--eerrr, mazatlan, we were hit with 60+ kt winds a bit North of cabo san lucas.. for this season, shoulda been higher....3 weeks later was 70+..lol.. friends ere bashing up in it....my simrad works wella nd we didnt have to work hard at all..was fun ride and truly a gas inthat boat to sail at 8+ kts under jib n jigger, both reefed..... awesome!!!!! NO-- why stop whenyer having fun!!!??? we each were able to pull 12 hour shifts easily under these conditions. why stop whenyer having a ball????? wasnt dangerous--we werent even heeled 10 degrees...was GRRRREAT!!!!!! STORM ANCHOR-- hell, no--- wtf for-- 60+kts is just getting the old gurlee going....
so whatziz stuff about sea anchors??? LOL..
sorry. i sail .

Would not be much simpler,to make a hourly call on the radio, announcing position, rate of drift, length of drougue device and all is safe and secure ?

Re: Sleeping at a Sea Anchor ??

Not sure this is terribly relevant but there sure doesn't seem to be much difference between a boat hove to, maybe making 2 knots, and a boat dodging along doing 5 or 6.

So I kinda think that the matter of sea anchor, or hove to, or sailing is more or less meaningless.

The idea of when to be on watch vs. the trade offs of not being able to sail because of lack of crew is meaningful.

BTW....how many of us never, ever drive over the speed limit?

Rules are generally made in order to efficiently assign blame once common sense has failed. Nothing more.

.
Consider that a Multi would probably be leaping off of waves at 12 to 20 in these same conditions.

When I deployed my sea anchor we had been dodging along with a double reefed main and a blade jib and were still hitting mid teens on a 32 ft cat 500 nautical miles offshore.

Definitely time to park it

Yes, not a situation I am likely to encounter in my 32 foot, steel 9 ton cutter.
