Guys, are you really saying that there are people in the water around you and they will drown if you do nothing and you don't want to put yourself at any risk? You would make no attempt to save any of them?

By the way, you would actually have no hope of saving very many anyway, hauling people on board in those conditions is no easy task. They are unlikely to have decent lifejackets. Not all will be strong swimmers. They will quickly disappear out of sight if conditions are bad.

To make no attempt to bring any of them on board is just appalling.
ithink the word you are looking for is "TRIAGE"

wounded from a battlefield or their care afterwards would divide the victims into three categories:[3][4]
Those who are likely to live, regardless of what care they receive;
Those who are likely to die, regardless of what care they receive;
Those for whom immediate care might make a positive difference in outcome.

Re: Skipper's Duty Towards Refugees

Atoll's thoughts closely reflect mine. Having said that, I've been a Good Samaritan by happenstance numerous times on land, so when faced with the situation, I'm not sure what I would do. A drowning person will take you down with them if you are not careful. A sinking boat of way too many people might do the same to you and your vessel. And to add to the situation, we have Ebola coming out of Africa in more and more cases. Now that I think about it, I might have called the CG and let them deal with a potentially deadly, for all concerned, situation.

Sorry, triage has nothing at all to do with looking after yourself at all cost, with total disregard for the safety or well being of others.

I can think of a few other words I would call it though.

Because you think you could not accommodate everyone, you would take none?

have you ever been in a riot or in a situation where people run amock.

think very carefully before picking up desperate African migrants from the water,the first one might be the skipper who has just lost his boat,and you have just provided him with another one............................

Atoll, drowning people are not rioting. These migrants are folk just like us. These are families with young kids dying in these waters.

Are you saying you would make your decision purely based on race?

Atoll, it is probably best for us to agree to disagree.

I would still fish you out if you were drowning nearby .

I may have been hasty in my reply. I'm certain that in such a situation i would do what I could to take on survivors up to the point I judged my boat safe.

their track record is not that good when it comes to human rights,most are fleeing civil wars,and have seen a lot of their "friends and family" die along the way.............your middle class western values really don't count when you put yourself in situations such as this.

you are very likely to become a statistic of why it is risky to pick up refugees in the water.

we pay taxes so that our navy's and coast guards who are equipped(with weapons) to deal with refugees in dire situations,as a yacht you are not,no matter how much of a Samaritan you might be.

Re: Skipper's Duty Towards Refugees

These conversations and suppositions are nice....but....IMHO you never really know wha you are going to do until faced with the situation.

It may be good to think it through ahead of time if you think you have a reasonable chance of encountering the situation yourself. Otherwise I don't know how much value there is to this effort.

in the last few days 160,000 refugees entered turkey from Syria,there are now 1.4 million displaced people on the shores of the med,this is over and above the already 10,000 a month that try to enter Europe every month over the past few years.

this will become a real problem for cruisers in the next year in the eastern med.

at the moment we are seeing the tip of the iceberg.
