Re: Self taught sailing

I'm surprised this has gone on for 3 pages. The simple answer is yes, self taught sailing is just fine. After all the human race has been sailing for over 6,000 years now-its just not that difficult.

For those that ask I equate sailing to golf or chess. You can learn enough to get by in an hour, you can spend a lifetime becoming an expert.

Fwiw I'm a full time transient liveaboard with no sailing experience other than a couple daysail charters prior to buying our 42' ketch. It's just not nearly as difficult as people want to pretend it is.

Your point is a good one, anyone with a half of a brain can make a sailboat sail in an hour of training. To make it sail well, that's a different story and it can take years.
