Probably, but it could be other things too.

Not knowing the reality it is just speculation but as someone said earlier, the salvage laws are damn near draconian in the fees and so perhaps this individual wants to pay and keep his home but not be forced out/off of it? Better to negotiate from a distance at times.

Yup...never use a get-away car that can only do 9 kts. Rosco and Mongo will probably be waiting for him at the next port.

Said the hit and run sailor..
Never spend more than you can afford to lose.. a basic law off sailing.

PS: learn some Maritime law if you are going foreign.. he's more likely to get his boat impounded now than he was before.

I have never, ever refused to help any sailor who needed it - you don't even have to ask. I have also received my fair share of help, and I'll probably find myself needing & providing help in the future as well.

That has NOTHING to do with what this 'captain' did. And yes, if I could "rat him out", I would.
Trust me, if he acts like this now, chances are pretty good he'll also do a runner if a cruiser helps him out and ends up with damage ... or even would like to just be reimbursed for costs (tho that doesn't happen often and is usually sorted with food & drinks ).

Really? You know me well enough how to make that statement?

This is exactly what I am seeing more and more of, people quick snapping to judgements, only seeing the world in their frame of their lens. Makes for rancor between people, not openness and acceptance.

So now, for the curious....who would I want to vote for oh swami of swammi's.

May be that's how this guy amassed enough euros to buy a 70' boat in the first place.

If running was the least worst option, I wonder what the other options were?

Might have been running a 1,000 miles of counterfeit knicker elastic for all we know. Once he's dropped it off to the knicker elastic smuggling submarine, he might head back.

eta: I wouldn't be surprised if the boat is found, with no sign of the crew. Or they scuttle it.

I remember a few years back 2 guys and a woman stole a big sailboat from a marina.. got drunk celebrating and ran her aground a few miles down the coast..
Wonder if these were relatives..

Boatman,

Wasn't it a year or two ago, I think in SF, when a guy was watching on the news how a 50ft boat had to be towed by CG when he realized it was his own boat? Apparently two or three bozos stolen that boat from a dock but could only move it a few nms from the marina and got stuck and called for a rescue.

That's the one.. don't think they called for help tho'.. I think it was run aground and when investigated the guys were passed out drunk..
