Re: Sailboat in the surf near San Francisco

It looks like she dug in or bounced along about one hundred meters before she finally came to a stop facing seaward.

It's gonna be a bear to get her out.

Re: Sailboat in the surf near San Francisco

If they had gone a few hundred yards more they would have been on rocks. That area of coast has collected a few boats over the years. About 35 years ago, I was living aboard in Sausalito when a beautiful Choey Lee Lion from a few slips away went on that beach area. The insurance company hired a crane to lift it off of the beach. They put a cable to the stem fitting, and the stern chain plate and lifted. Snapped a 35 foot wood beauty right in two. I almost cried. I hope this rescue is more successful. I will be watching the late news tonight.___Grant.

There was a lot of ethanol involved (not in the fuel). Drugs? Why do criminals look so dumb?

Interesting question - does your insurance cover damage from theft?

Looks like they started to come in at Point Lobos for a pint, but elected to turn into Half Moon...a wee tad too early imho.

Re: Sailboat in the surf near San Francisco

She's still reporting her position on AIS, so, as long as her batteries hold out, you can watch the progress here: http://aprs.fi/#!mt=hybrid&z=18&call...200&tail=43200

So far, in the last 12 hours, she's only moved toward shore. Did anyone there think to haul out an anchor to seaward?

I don't understand that owner... I would've wiped that smile off their faces and some extra before allowing them to leave on stretchers instead of dancing

You give them way too much credit. Stolen boat, Authorities found the cockpit full of empties. They were stumbling drunk. Sails were never up. I'll stick my neck out and bet they had no idea how to sail. They ran aground because they didn't know it had a 14 foot keel.

This marina was built in the 1930's, and I've never heard of a boat being stolen before. Lots of high-end boats, but it's very "sausalito." It's the kind of place where, if you demanded better security, the harbor master would give you a list of gated marinas and tell you to get lost.

So this multi million dollar vessel was just sitting there with the keys in it and not even a dock gate? Crazy. There have been several similar incidents around here. One would be thief stole an Offshore 64 and then managed to play ping pong down the dock trying to get it out of the marina. Thieves and criminals do really stupid things all the time.

I understand that this is not a loss of life tragedy, but it is still horrible. A beautiful ship is a work of art, and has significant value beyond it's monetary value. It's 8:52 PM (Monday night) now and according to the AIS page she's still stuck. Hope they can get her off.

100' (30m) tug Sea Eagle has been on scene for a while now. High tide about 0500 tomorrow, about 2' higher than this evening's high. Cold front coming through tonight with small craft warning for tomorrow morning and swells from the NW building to 9'.

Whew...the swells might actually help get her out. I wish them luck.

That is going to be a good size salvage bill.

She's off the beach this morning, on her way to Bay Marine, apparently floating. Too early in the morning for me to watch, but that's what I hear.

Well, that's good news and hopefully she will be sailing again soon. Unlike the metal boat taken for a joyride that ended up on Long Island a year or two ago. Hopefully, we will get a damage report at some point.

Darling is now on the hard. Busted up rudder, bent prop. Keel intact but damaged (?)
