s/v Irvmiren - Swan 68 sinks, 6 rescued

"6 rescued from sailboat foundering off Cape May"

Here's a link to the forsale page: Swan 68-Irvmiren - Nautor's Swan USA East

One wonders how a yacht such as this could take on water like that in only 10ft seas. Hopefully more information will come out sometime.

Et Tu Swan! So much for the curse of the Beneteaus! At least this sinking had a happy ending. This also just reinforces my reason for never owning a Swan! Especially a 68 footer. All that woodwork a cabinet craftsmanship gets in the way of finding leaks. No Sir, you won't find me on a Swan. Unless of course I'm invited.

Let me see, I can't imagine anything that could cause a high-quality boat that is for sale in a limited market to end up taking on water from various locations in what were really only moderate conditions........ How tragic for the owners!

How lucky for the owners-how tragic for the insurance companies.

Well that's a little cynical. Somewhere an insurance executive is weeping real tears. Looking at the plans for the boat I count a minimum of four heads that's a lot of seacocks and hoses that could fail under all that finely crafted wood work. The good news New Jersey Scuba Divers may have a new million dollar dive site to explore this summer.

A Swan 48, Wolfhound, went down near Bermuda about 1 yr ago, if memory and my data base serves.

Well, it worked for the garden hose couplers.

Didn't that boat have the rudder fail and was abandoned because of no steering?

Wow! What a boat to lose...

The NautorSwan page states the location as coming up east coast after being in the pacific. Wonder what on earth caused them to ship that much water so far into the passage?

I am betting a nickle there was a leak responsible for the boat shipping water.

This is what I have in my db. The charger stopped working and they lost electrical power. Then they couldn't get the engine started. Soon they had no nav. system and no comms. systems.

Fuel/Engine, electrical problems, knockdowns forced abandonment.

There was a child involved, so it's difficult for me to ascribe ulterior motives.

What a beautiful boat. So sad.
