LOL! Though it's last AIS location 38 35 08N, 74 55 57W yesterday afternoon shows that if she went down it would only be in about 60 feet of water. Mast might even be sticking up above the surface if she's upright on the bottom.

Abandon Ship! The Rescue of the Crew of Wolfhound
The Wolfhound was abandoned but didn't sink. It was spooted a couple of months later by a korean (?) ship and pictures taken. It had a broken forestay at that point. I believe I remember reading that a silboat tried to tow it in but the guy as alsone and finally had to cut it loose. Could still be out there somewhere.

Re: s/v Irvmiren - Swan 68 sinks, 6 rescued

When I first heard of the Irvmiren rescue, I was looking for info on the vessel. Low and behold I get an e-mail from a charter broker saying what a beautiful yacht and very professional crew it has.... After I finished laughing for a bit, I notified her it was in the process of sinking off NJ. Darn should have had more fun with it....

Re: s/v Irvmiren - Swan 68 sinks, 6 rescued

Anyone hear any more scuttlebutt about the fate of this million dollar Swan? Who was pulled off of it? If it sunk it's only in 60 feet of water and sure to be a navigation hazard to the boats heading out to fish out of Ocean City and Indian Inlet as well as others traveling along the coast. Wonder if somebody is going to salvage it? Anyone in Ocean City hear anything on the docks or from the Coast Guard mariners broadcast in the area?

$20k of that is actually a salvage fee

Having just replaced over 20 through hull fittings, ball valves, couplers and elbows with naval bronze, Lewmar marilon valves, couplers and elbows... I know of at least 100 ways water could have entered and sunk the Swan.

Many boats even of high quality were fitted with crappy Admiralty brass over the past 20 years. We found significant electrolysis issues on several through hulls due to improper bonding and/or prior mechanics failing to reconnect the bonding wires.

When was the last time you personally checked yours?

Mycroft/im glad to see some responsible tweets as loosing any vessel is a heart felt emotional time(delivering or owning)give them a break until the facts are known

20 seems like a lot of thru hulls on a 50 footer. I had around 15 on my 43' ketch. I removed one toilet and out in a washer. 2 of the holes were old transducers. Combined some intakes and glassed up some holes and got down to around 9 including the shaft.

New boat has 2 below WL.

There are actually 24 through hulls. I left four hard to get at fittings that look fine for next year.

24 is not unusual if you want luxury items like washer, watermaker, air conditioner, generator etc. I'm not camping.

Sure any boat could be sunk by failure of a through hull(s). But, I imagine this boat had a professional crew and was well maintained. I would think whoever insured the boat would require it. How were they were not able to find the leaks puzzles me. Was it a new crew who did not yet know the boat inside and out? Were areas of the hull inaccessible due to the cabinetry? This was not some weekend daysailer that sunk. I'm just very curious to know why and how it sunk and want might have helped prevent it. Could help others in the future save their boats.
