Fair enough.

If our children were onboard and I even showed the slightest sign of struggling to stop a flood, the Admiral would be running at the EPIRB!

Nope Wolfhound was the guy with I-Pad nav station and engine failure so couldn't recharge his batteries.. and I believe they could not cook coz the gaz solenoid would not work without power...

One wonders how a yacht such as this could take on water like that in only 10ft seas. Hopefully more information will come out sometime.

Apparently, she's still afloat!

key to solving a water intake problem is knowing about it in time to be able to react. A bilge high water alarm is a big help and can be had for $20 to $100. Could have been a anti siphon device not working on a head or bilge pump.

I was under the impression from the RH incident that, once abandoned, the Coasties require scuttling to prevent a hazard to navigation. Or maybe it's the Navy. Or maybe it was just RH doing it voluntarily. Can't remember . . . .

I wonder if a private salvage effort will be commenced given the potential value & proximity to shore?

It appears she has an AIS transponder on board but, was last picked up when she was near Jupiter Florida on May 24th.
IRVMIREN - Pleasure Craft: current position and details | MMSI 235138000, Callsign | Registered in United Kingdom - AIS Marine Traffic
Wonder if it's still on? Who wouldn't like to salvage a $950,000 yacht only 25 miles off of Cape May? Would be nice money for a days work.

Just an FYI to last position IRVMIREN Current position (IMO N/A MMSI 235138000) | VesselFinder Not sure of the accuracy but looks pretty darn close...

Re: s/v Irvmiren - Swan 68 sinks, 6 rescued

I'm sure confused here...

1. a Very high quality yacht, supposedly in good nick, starts leaking "uncontrollably" in moderate sea and wx conditions. No collisions, etc, reported.

2. Large crew available to pump, bail etc.

3. Not far offshore.

4. Yacht is still afloat days later, so leaks couldn't have been so bad??

There is something odd about this. Must be something we haven't been told.

Hope she is salvaged, for both fiscal and forensic reasons.

Jim

Re: s/v Irvmiren - Swan 68 sinks, 6 rescued

Why the title "Swan Sinks" if its still floating? Actually on stick built boats you can get to the hull and thru hulls with relative ease in most cases, even with fancy furniture. It will be interesting to find out why they were taking on water..thru hull? split hose? damage? but it sounds like they were really getting flooded.

Hmmm guess AIS is still working and some passing ship picked up the signal and updated it to Vessel Finder. Damn, I was on land and stayed at Rehoboth Beach last week and Ocean City the week before. Would have been nice to hire some local out of Bethany or Ocean City and save this Swan. At 1.7 knots it appears to be still drifting out there. Would also be a nice pay day for some commercial fisherman out of Ocean City who can bring it back too. Though the insurance company may already have someone on the way out to grab it. Wonder how much this incident will affect the sale price?

I agree Jim... Methinks the people onboard panicked when they saw a flooded ER overflowing into the other bilge spaces.
Maybe minimal bilge pumps and a reluctance of anyone to wade into the tight ER to find the leak
Coast guard shows up...prioritizes to get the crew off and leaves the boat.

Well the a Coasties are there to save people not the boat. I'm surprised they had a dewatering pump. I was under the impression that they would do nothing to save a vessel I had assumed for liability reasons
