Retrieving rope-to-chain with windlass

I have never brought aboard a rope/chain combo on a boat that has two separate gypsies. All I have used were the single gypsies that fit both.

How does one transfer over if it remains under tension? I can see if it is slack it could just be carried over but this cannot always be the case right?

On the set ups like that that I’ve dealt with the following procedure worked.
The rode gypsy was the top one so as the chain approached I would lightly depress the chain with my foot guiding it to the chain gypsy.

the rope will run in the chain gypsy if it is sized correctly

Install a chain stopper or rig a chain hook on a strop. Retrieve rope portion plus a few feet of chain with drum. Set stopper or hook on chain. Move rode over to chain gypsy.

That is all I could think of. I guess it would work out.

Panope is right-on. Be sure to rig this well ahead of time in that the strop needs to be attached to a very rugged point should you be retrieving the gear in a pitching sea.

have a vertical windlass with rope and chain gypsy. If I use the rope gypsy, just bring the rode up till the chain is aboard and the chain stopper holds it while I change over to the chain gypsy.

On my 450, I just pull lightly on the rope that fed through the windlass, from under the windlass, when it is about to switch from rope to chain. It works perfectly every time. I only use the chain gypsy. It grabs the rope perfectly.
