My solution would be a funnel attached to a hose long enough to reach the filler neck. Less than ideal in rough conditions and would need two people but workable in a pinch.

Wow - that looks great. I have used a siphon with a bellows pump but it is a bit flaky - this looks better.

Just checked and $7 at Harbor Freight! Next trip...

Several good ideas, but the OP did ask what you do if your pump/syphon/whatever goes overboard and all you have left on board is some plain hose

Be careful of the plastic ended jiggle siphons - in the tropics. Mine expanded so much the marble kept falling out. Resorted to the rag in the neck trick. Don't need two hoses if the jerrycan has a breather - you can blow through the breather, or block it off and press on the sides to compress the can - open the breather as soon as the siphon starts.... :-)

I have used the hand starting siphon pumps sold for kerosine heaters. You can add extra hose if necesasary.

They recommend it for diesel and gasoline, just not fuel tanks which I take to meaning automobile tanks. There are often flapper valves which can make removal difficult or impossible. Not a problem for our uses - unless you want to use it to steal gasoline from cars?

Just a thought, though seems a bit off the standard... Why not add a second filler inlet somewhere on deck or more convenient. All it would require would be a diesel rated T fitting, a length of marine fuel hose a filler cap a smallish hole saw and some sealant.

If refueling underway is a frequent occurance this is what I would go with. Safer and more reliable than anything else. Remember with a transfer pump, a funnel or other fitting you will still need to lean over deck to access the fuel filler to connect all this stuff.

If this is something you do with any frequency use should install a larger tank or maybe another tank in a different location that could be transferred via electric pump to your primary tank. Siphoning fuel more than once a year is too much for me. I'm not really a fan of KISS. Put a tank where you can, add a deck fill, and plumb it in. Rid yourself of some jerry jugs.

It's funny you should suggest that an electric transfer pump does not adhere to the KISS principle. I plumbed in an electric transfer plumb BECAUSE it did keep things simple. So I reckon you are following my favourite principal despite your misgivings.

Seriously, transfer pumps are very reliable and by keeping the manual fill point on my original tank I have a good fallback in the event of electrical problems with the transfer pump.

I completely believe they are reliable, I was just stating that many her would rather siphon weekly, rather than install wiring, fuses, switches, plumbing, ect.. I love a nice complicated system, I'm a gadget guy and mechanic.

There's a few of us here who don't have the luxury of two 150 litre tanks to link for transfers in our 31ft and under boats.. some only have 40L tanks and have to carry extra cans strapped midships on each side..
And I think that was the OP's point and difficulty..
