Not strictly true. Almost all the boats had crew members on board. The problem was a combination of things. Ther is no real safe anchorage in that area, you pretty much have to anchor where they were, and if the weather changes, things get nasty, especially since the holding is not good. In fact most of the boats had large anchors and plenty of scope. A lot of the carnage was caused, apparently, by one boat dragging its anchor and dragging it through the fleet. Such a sad sight, indeed.

The poor holding in that area is well known. Most of the race boats carried a plenty heavy anchor that they would leave in position, with a fender or float attached while they went off racing.

I will remember that when I am cruising...No matching t shirts...

I think my stomach just flipped about fifty times watching this...liken it to watching race horses running through mud up to their withers...so sad...

I have to say that comments such as that posted by rebel heart, above, irritate me. There may be some racing boats where the crew are not well informed about proper anchoring techniques, but to generalise all racing sailors as clueless, and to imply that racing sailors wearing matching t-shirts are bad sailors is, in my opinion and experience, uninformed stereotyping that belittles the skill and knowledge of this large segment of the sailing community. I have seen non-racing sailors do just as many dumb things as racing sailors. Cruisers no more have the monopoly on knowledge and skill than any other sailors. A little homework and research on what actually happened there, who did what, what sort of ground tackle these boats were using, how many crew were on board the boats when they dragged might be in order before conclusions are jumped to.

For what it is worth, when we aren't cruising our boat, we do a fair bit of racing. When we race we wear matching t-shirts. When are the bad things going to start happening to us?
