Private Weather/Gulf Stream Forecasting Recommendations?

Hi:

I think I would benefit, at least until I get back into the rhythm of passage making, from some intermittent or regular advice/counsel from someone expert in helping sailors make their way perhaps around the world.

I recall several discussions along the lines of who might do this reasonably and reliably -- but can't locate the thread.

Help!

Thanks all.

Jenifer Clark (Jenifer Clark's Gulfstream) is the usual suspect for gulf stream weather, and commander's weather is the usual suspect for passage weather Commanders' Weather

BUT, I have to say, you can get pretty much everything you will pay them for, for free from the internet and gribs and even more from listening to the passage nets. We have tried shore weather/routing and not found it worthwhile.

Ditto what Evans said. I've used both Jenifer and Commander's products and they were great. It's a good idea to develop your own capability to find, read and successfully interpret the voluminous weather data available on the Internet, but at least in my case, it took quite a bit of effort over time to become sufficiently proficient at it.

Another source for real-time weather routing is Herb Hilgenberg. He provides free guidance on a daily basis to mariners in the North Atlantic on 12359 MHz USB.

Ditto Evans #2

We paid $50 for the NZ guy to give us a specific report for a passage I was worried about and that was great. The particular difficulty was that I needed to look into the second week of a 2 week passage. No forcaster will forecast out 2 weeks, or even more than 1 week, but I gave him the perameters and he took a stab in the dark - an educated stab in the dark. It was good, he was right, and we were fine.

That being said, I agree with Evans that its all available for free on the net. BUT also and perhaps more importantly: If you learn to interpret yourself the those dollars saved are gold!

Given a forecast on a platter we learn naught. Given nothing we begin to look at clouds and the waves; given something in between we look at all and everything

Specific danger areas, like the gulf stream, which I have not done properly, I would probably be really researching all weather forcasting advice!

Here are two sites I use regularly.
PassageWeather - Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers
GRIB.US > Home

You will have to download an applet for the grib reader.
There are lots more, just search around.
