Preparing for blue water crewing

Hi All
Long time lurker - new poster.
I've many years dinghy sailing and some coastal cruising and bareboat chartering (as skipper). Now I might have the opportunity to sail the Canaries to the Caribbean as a crew member on a 46' monohull.
What do you suggest I read or do (apart from ensuring I'm fit and in good physical nick)?

This may seem obvious but bears repeating. Talk to the captain and ask everything you can think of. Some that come to mind.

Number 1!!! How experience and competent (and sane) is the captain? You don't want to get halfway across the ocean only to learn you're trapped on a boat with a newbie that's also crazy.

Next, condition of the boat. Is it in good condition and prepared for the trip.

Then the details. What is supplied and what do you need to bring? weather gear">Foul weather gear, personal safety equipment (harness and related gear). How much room will you have to store your stuff. Who pays for the ticket home.
