Maybe check out a kiteboarding setup. We have what's called a chicken loop so if you get overpowered at all, a hard yank on the safety line will release tension on the lines on half of the kite and it just flutters into the water. Not ideal on a yacht, but could prevent disaster.

I think that a kite woud be a much more flexible and handle design. Easier and safer to set and handle and much more useful in a much more variety of situations and set ups.
But the truth is- I've never flown one and don't have clue.
