Online courses

Does anybody know if the offer online courses for a six-paxk captain's license. All courses I find are live and expensive.

We have them near us and they all charge money. It's a real class with instructors run by a for profit company. It is not a cheap thing. Unless you need it for a job it is a total waste of money. A 6 pack license is pointless unless you are accepting money for hire in US waters. If you do want to use it as a money making activity then you need to spend money to make it and you have to have the license. It's why they charge as much as they do.

No online courses exist. All the materials you need are howver free from the USCG and associated web sites. Learning it is up to you. You'll still need to pay for the exam.

You can buy the book Get Your Captains License. There is a disk with it that has all the questions from the test. The book and disk is about $60.

When you install and run the disk, it will give you questions at random in a mix similar to what you would get if you took it with USCG. It grades you and tells you if you pass.

There are places on line to get a copy of all the possible questions.

You can bone up independently and then take the test at the nearest REC (regional exam center) all of which are listed on the USCG web site (USCG Licensing & Documentation). There is also a list of all approved course. If there is an online approved course, it will be listed there. I seriously doubt you can take the test on line. It must be monitored.

There are some good on line courses on rules of the road (Online Tests Boatingsafety.com).

When I did my OUPV I did it at a local community college. Tuition was $60. Check with schools in your area. Not knowing where you are, I can't help you there.

There are options to the high priced guys.

Thanks all...
I got all the info I really needed. I've been boating for 25 years as sport in Caribbean waters and don't really need a license. I might just want to impress the grand kids with a fancy captain's shirt and cap but maybe not worth the expense.

Happy salings and if you are ever in San Juan, Puerto Rico let me know.
