Another reason is due to having been at sea professionally for many years, and actually having difficulty remembering the land side terminology!

that's the point. language is used to communicate our thoughts to other people. this only works when we speak the same language. if i come to you and ask for a glass of water because i am dying of thirst, i had best call it a glass of water. it doesn't matter if i prefer to call it a bucket of urine. what matters is that i can communicate my thoughts to you. otherwise, i might just end up with a bucket of urine to drink.

but, maybe i am wrong. maybe it really doesn't matter what you call things. after all, a lot of younger people, now, just call everything a "thing" or "that"; not seeming to actually know the names of everyday items.

oh well, i need to get off my button board and fill the cesspool with oil so i can take a toilet and go to flat cushion because, i have to get up and go to seesaw in the morning.

yeah. it doesn't matter what you call things.

lol. i didn't check the date. i was searching for something and the link was one of the list results. i started reading and, naturally, commented. i'm terrible at remembering to look at post dates before i comment.

We have bedrooms,kitchen,dunnies,front and back verandas,dog kennel,roof,ropes and a dinghy on davits but it is usually called the Ute as it carries all our junk to and fro and is usually full of rubbish waiting to be disposed of.

We are now landlubbers prepping our new/old boat for cruising but spent several years out and about on our previous boat. We said galley, head, salon, topside, down below, etc. as a part of our life at sea, and now on our new boat. All our sailor friends use the same terminology. Pushpit is rarely used although all of us know what it is. But if you say stern pulpit no one gets confused. If you said pushpit I know there are some very good sailors out there who would be very confused. If you said stern pushpit, some would know you are talking about the stern "pulpit" and just think you are pretty odd.

What really is confusing to some of our landlubber friends when we go to their house, or they come to ours, and we call the kitchen the galley. Or the living room the salon. Or downstairs is down below (or just below). Or have to use the head instead of the toilet. Actually say that all the time. None of our sailor friends get confused by that in their/our house but the landlubbers chuckle sometimes.

In Toronto We use Pushpit or if its lower sternrail. On the saftey side I used to race with a skipper who could head up in both directions that was entertaining.
On the fun side when my brother and I where racing our 27 foot sport cat ,we were 20 at the time .We started calling the berth on our boat the workbench,we still call bunks on boats the work bench 30 years later. Not quuite so much work now
